Let's try this again!
Last week in the Washington Post I read an article about the NCAA changing rules pertaining to kids attending prep schools and the reclassification of high school students pertaining to their college eligibility. I am not sure I fully understand this new rule and need help. Below are my questions:

1. If a high school senior (class of 07) does not graduate in the next few months and has to repeat their senior year it is my understanding that they would not be eligible for NCAA D-1 or D-2 athletics as of August 1st. Does this affect a kid who repeated say 9th grade or is this only for those who purposely repeat their senior season to entice more colleges to recruit them?

2. If a high school student attends prep school next school year they can not take classes that they did poorly in to beef up their GPA. Does this mean a kid like one I know who goes to prep school next year, numbers (SAT & GPA) will remain the same?

3. A high school graduate can only go to prep school to better prepare them for standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT.

4. Any of the above must submit a wavier request to the NCAA Clearinghouse to be eligible for college athletics.

Please help me clarify this matter..

The few times I've tried to get ahold of someone at the NCAA compliance office it has taken forever to get a call back so we may have to wait until we watch a kid go through this.

I just heard that the new rule does go into effect on Aug. 1st. To paraphrase " students have four years of high school only" to take any classes after your initial class has graduated, one must submit a waiver to the clearinghouse. And only ONE course will be used if the wavier is granted to add to the calculation of GPA scores.
I interpret this to mean a student that reclassifies during their junior or senior year can only use one course to add to their records.

Hey sh4,

Here's a little clarification....not the "be all" or final word but it helped me.

HS Students are required as of Aug 1 '07 to graduate within 4 years of them entering HS to be eligible to participate in D-1, D-2 athletics as a collegiate freshman. Even those who repeated earlier in their grade school career are subject to this rule. So if you repeated say in the 6th, then when you enter HS you have 4 years (and trust me they will want a waiver filled out to verify because this is the shaky point). But if you repeated in the 10th, you are short. Depending of course on what actually happened "CAN U SAY WAIVER." Remember you do get one core course after official graduation year and also the optimum phrase is "when you entered HS."

Core course calculations are made based on the courses that are completed during this time. If a student does not graduate with their official class, and attends a prep school (or any other HS school for that matter), ONLY one additional core course may be calculated into the core GPA or substituted for a core course already calculated in the core GPA.....sounds like law school. Meaning you no longer can reclassify to repeat core course work or go to prep, the limit is 1 core and you cannot fail more than one core course. Hopefully that's not the circumstance.

SATs are a different story....They actually can be taken as often as you like given a 6 month wait between each test taken (or is it 3 months?) but remember that SAT/ACT are averaged so the more you take them the less change will occur. And the wait period will hender your timeline to get into schools. BUT the kicker is that you can no longer booooost your core GPA at prep to lower your SAT eligibility score.

So to answer:
1. the ncaa does not distinguish between the 2 situations....official 4 years is official.
2. other than the 1 core allowed - GPA will remain the same. Can redo SAT.
3. yep if they choose that route.
4. all the above.

i'm out!
