A judge has decided that a former Mayfield High School basketball standout will be sentenced as an adult in a stabbing attack on her mother and sister.
State District Judge Robert Robles made the ruling Wednesday, a day after a hearing concluded in the case of 17-year-old Carissa McGee. He said she isn’t amenable to psychiatric treatment or rehabilitation in one of the state’s juvenile facilities, reports SanteFeNewMexican.com
According to the Deming Headlight, " sentence as an adult would mean a possible 21-year prison term. As a juvenile, she would
be confined to a state facility for treatment until the age of 21.
McGee was 16 years old when prosecutors say she stabbed her mother, Anita McGee, and sister, Marie McGee, a combined total of 35 times in addition to attempts to cut both women's throats.
"In a packed courtroom Monday that included the McGee sisters' former teammates and Mayfield basketball coach George Maya, Marie and Anita McGee were in the same room with Carissa McGee for the first time since the stabbing", reports the Deming Headlight."Marie McGee — herself a Mayfield standout now playing basketball for the University of Arizona — had visible scars from the attack. She and her mother often held each other and wept as details of the attack surfaced"
