This weekend, June 5-6, the annual Southwest Shootout high school summer tournament will take place at Black Hills and Tumwater High Schools with a typically strong mix of schools from 4A all the way down to 2B in the 21-team field. If you are in or near the South Sound this is a fun one to watch as 17 of the 21 teams had winning records in 2009-10 and several went to State in their classifications. A number of All-State players are also on the teams, along with dozens of all-leaguers.
Pool play begins Friday night, continues Saturday, with bracket elimination and consolation games played late Saturday and throughout Sunday. Here is the pool play schedule, with a few notes on each team after their first scheduled game:
Pool A/B (both are two-team pools, with crossover games that also include Pool E):
Friday, 5 p.m. at Black Hills Main Gym: Napavine vs. Black Hills
Both teams comes off state appearances, with Napavine finishing 17-5 after winning two and losing two at 2B State. Black Hills was 13-12 and was "two and 'cue" at 2A State.
Friday, 7 p.m. at BHM: Napavine vs. White River
White River reached 3A State and returns leading scorers Brooke Paulson (15.3 ppg, 7.4 rbpg, 2.3 spg) and Sabra Sproul (12.0 ppg, 4.6 rbpg, 2.4 spg)
Friday, 6 p.m. at BHM: Toutle Lake vs. White River
Toutle Lake was 17-11 and grabbed third at 2B State. Back are the two leaders of a very balanced squad, Christian Carlson (8.6 ppg, 2.5 apg) and Payton Hoff (7.3 ppg, 6.0 rbpg).
Friday, 8 p.m. at BHM: Toutle Lake vs. Black Hills.
Pool C:
Saturday, 9 a.m. at Black Hills Auxiliary Gym: Battle Ground vs. Timberline
Battle Ground was just 8-12 a year ago, but plays at the 4A level with some tough customers down Vancouver way. Timberline's post-season run made it through subdistricts, but just one game into 3A bi-districts, though its 12-10 overall record was better than anything the Blazers had posted in eight years. Back are leading scorer Sasha Weber (16.8 ppg, 5.5 rbpg, 4.1 spg) and fellow 1st team All-WCC guard Camille Williams (12.4 ppg, 3.8 apg).
Saturday, 11 a.m. at BHM: Juanita vs. Timberline
The 3A Rebels can bring some size with them on the long drive south for the tourney with leading scorer 6'0" Kate Cryderman (10.6 ppg) and 6'3" post Molly Grager (4.7 ppg).
Saturday, 1 p.m. at BHA: Battle Ground vs. Juanita
Pool D:
Saturday, 9 a.m. at BHM: Chehalis (WF West) vs. Rainier
Chehalis was 12-8, its best mark in years, last season and was the only team to defeat 2A State champion River Ridge. Post Uriah Thomas is the lone returning All-Evco choice for the Bearcats. Rainier (16-7) made it to the 1A State tournament for two games behind All-State guard Kristen Schoenherr.
Saturday, 11 a.m. at BHA: Chehalis vs. Peninsula
3A Peninsula will be rebuilding, having lost its top three players from the '09-'10 squad.
Saturday, 1 p.m. at BHM: Rainier vs. Peninsula

Ridge dominated the 2A ranks in '09-'10, going 24-1 on its way to the State title under new coach Tom Kelly. First team All-State guard Samira McDonald returns along with the MVP of the State tournament, post Jenn Cole. Samira's sister Jasmine and shooting guard Kelsey Russell also earned All-Evco honors. Bethel has three players who earned some form of All-SPSL 4A honors back from a 17-8 season: Danielle Tabb, Elisha Salas and Haley Winters.

Saturday, 3 p.m. at BHM: Black Hills vs. Bethel

Yelm, 19-9 last season, loses the guts of its team, but has been to 3A State the past two years under supremely confident head coach Russ Riches and even won a game at the Dome in 2010. Back are high potential '13 wing Anushka Maldonado (9.2 ppg, 6.4 rbpg) and Samantha Jennen (6.3 ppg, 3.8 rbpg). North Beach is another stellar small school squad that posted a 15-4 mark in '09'-10 and has standouts Nicole Moseley and Tahnee McCrary back.

Eatonville reached the quarterfinals of 2A State behind the play of Nisqually 2A League player of the year Becca Schrimpsher, who is still around.

BCHS finished 19-7 and played all four days at 1A State behind all-leaguers Maren Hanes, Bree Oldham, Alina Valle and Rookie of the year Lauren Manten. North Thurston finished down the standings in the 3A Western Cascade Conference, but hopes for better days, dropping to the 2A ranks next season with guards Catie Mets, Elyssa Quichocho and Victoria Ferguson potentially carrying the load,
Saturday, 12 noon at BHM: Skyview vs. Bellevue Christian
New Storm coach Jennifer Buscher gets her first look at her defending 4A GSHL champs; a team that includes an incredible '12 class of Maddie Van Liew, Kate Swanson, Brooke Bowen and Nikki Bond.

Tumwater is coming off a 14-11 mark and a 2A State appearance, led by first team all-leaguer Tayler Weiks, along with standouts McKenzie Cooper and Haley Vandenhazel. Woodland was 15-8 in the 1A ranks.
