This should get real interesting...how many of these girls can only lose their place on the team at the trials as opposed to those who are trying to make the team?

The team will be composed of at most 12 players. Nobody has a place on the team, everyone starts as equals, every selection, every year. When it's done and they've chosen the team and alternates, there'll be a lot of disappointed people.

I don't know how familiar you are with these trials, but they are really designed to determine who really is willing to put up with the amount of effort it takes to make the USA team. Their schedule for four days is basically drills and eat and sleep. And that's about it, other than the fact that they do have scrimmages. People are going to hurt and hurt a lot, it's no place for quitters. Many a top prospect has fallen out because they couldn't handle the pace.

And once you are selected for the team, when you return for training camp, it's almost as grueling. You've gotta love basketball if you want to play for your country!

I guess that's one thing I love about Courtney Paris. She's made every team, has played every single available competition, and never has anything but nice words about everyone and everthing. Although many think she won't make the USA senior team this year, I would never bet against her. Her powers of concentration and effort are amazing.

Congrats to all the young ladies, the hard work continues to pay off!!!:D
Whoa, I heard MS was older but had no idea...my daughter is a Sr. and she is 17 and will be 17 when she graduates. This is really interesting, What if instead of grade level you had to be a certain age in school to get accolades or even participate...
What's the oldest age group that competes in the summer, like the BW's DFW's, etc 17 or 18 & under?

Out of curiosity how old is Tina Charles - she must be at least a 20 year old freshman in college or she would be on this list right?

Thanks for the info First...I see that her Birthday is December 5th, 1988...It appears she skipped a grade as she just turned 18 in December.

Trials for the U19, U21 and Pan American teams will be held concurrently from May 17-20 at the Springs, but they haven't even announced the invitees for the U21/Pan American trials yet, with the start of the combined trials just six days away. What's the holdup?

And the Youth Development Festival begins in just over a month, I'd expect to hear who the invitees are in two or three weeks. That'll be a group of something like 34-36 players who will be high school seniors or juniors next year.

USA Basketball Youth Development Festival: June 13-17
FIBA U21 World Championship: June 29 - July 8
FIBA U19 World Championship: July 12-22
Pan American Games: July 20-24

gbuzz, what sessions will be you be attending or what days? We will have to hook up as I will be in town then. Grab lunch and I can pick your brain a little. As a former Lit major, I have a couple of friends that are writers and I know how much they love a free meal!

Tina did not skip a grade. She is in the correct age group for her grade in NYC

How can that be? She was a 17 year old until December of her Freshman year in College? Am I doing my math wrong on this...Or does New York have an atypical cutoff date?

Tina would also be the right age if she frew up in California.

That’s the way school works in NYC. I understand in may work differently in other areas of the country.

In NYC:

All girls born in 1988 are in the 2006 graduating class.

All girls born in 1989 are in the 2007 graduating class etc....
