Another big girl for Stanford and it would be a good pick up, but they need to recruit someone who can defend and has speed to replace Wiggins? How are they doing on
that type of player?

So how did Stanford do before Wiggins came along?

I doubt Stanford can find another Wiggins. Do you have any players in mind?

Also how would you compare Buck & Boothe? Buck not completing the application form may be an indication that she is not serious. I can't see Buck completing the application and getting the letters of recommendation during the summer.

Have we heard anything about Nneka? Do we have an application submitted ?

Stanford has Nicole Powell before Wiggins. I agree that Buck not completing the application process by this time may mean that she is not serious. While I have argued before that I don't think the standards at Stanford are as high as some people thing, I do agree that the application process itself is a big hoop to jump through as compared to other schools. Now that Samantha Prahais has stated that she would consider west coast schools, this would give Stanford the star power and exciting player they need to keep things rolling after Wiggins leaves.:)

The Prahalis is quoted as saying she wants a school where she can be free to play her game. I don't think that sounds anything like Stanford.

So if you feel Nicole Powell is like Wiggins, whats wrong with Pederson. With Pederson, Appel and Pohlen Stanford should be on track to do good things.

UCLA would be a possibility as a West Coast team for Prahalis as Kathy Olivier would turn the team over to Prahalis and let her do her thing. Saints is right. Tara would never allow this.

I think that Cal and USC are the PAC 10 teams that are actively pursuing Sammy P, and I would love for her to commit to either school, even though I'm a Stanford fan.

Of the two, I think that USC is a better fit, especially with USC coach Mark Trakh's flexibility in his offense. Moreover she will be potentially teaming up with 2 great shooting guards, i.e., Jackie GEMELOS (#2 overall recruit from 2006) and Stephanie GILBREATH (#11 overall recruit from 2007) for 3 seasons, in a mostly guard-oriented offense.

Sammy P going to USC means Showtime is back in LA - primarily a "Jackie & Sammy" show!

then the start of the post-WIGGINS era (i.e., 2008-2009 season) at Stanford will have the following depth chart:

SF - Jillian HARMON 6'1 / Ashley CIMINO 6'3
PF - Kayla PEDERSEN 6'4 / Michelle HARRISON 6'3
CC - Jayne APPEL 6'4 / Sarah BOOTHE 6'5 / Morgan CLYBURN 6'4
SG - Jeanette POHLEN 6'0 / Hannah DONAGHE 5'11 / Lindy LAROCQUE 5'9
PG - Melanie MURPHY 5'9 / JJ HONES 5'10 / Rosalyn GOLD-ONWUDE 5'10

Note: Players in BOLD are incoming freshmen

with 2 more recruiting slots available from the HS Class of 2008.

And given the above-mentioned 2008-2009 depth chart, I really don't see BUCK joining the Cardinal picture.

However, if BOOTHE decides otherwise, then Stanford should really go after OGWUMIKE or BUCK.

I see a player like Buck for the future. Appel will be a Junior by the time Buck would come on board. Morgan a Senior. Buck would be right in line to take over in two years. Buck would be in the same situation at UCONN. I don't see Buck playing over Tina Charles.

Stanford should go after Ogwumike no matter what.

Good work joemontes on your analysis of Stanford. However, LaRocque is 5'7" according
to the guys at Hoopgurlz. They need a player like Ogwumike for sure. Otherwise, team
will be real good, but too slow to keep up with the girls being recruited by ASU, Cal, USC,
UCLA and Oregon State. Could be WNIT time for Stanford in two years?

I was at the 2007 EOT tournament where LAROCQUE played, and I made it a point to stand beside her (without her noticing, of course) a few times, and I can safely confirm that she is about the same height as myself, which is somewhere between 5'8 or 5'9, but closer to 5'9.

I really don't know what your definition of "too slow" is, but I don't think a PG like Melanie MURPHY is "too slow" compared to a Dymond SIMON (and Mr. BrooklynSaints should know better than anyone else)....or a center like APPEL is "too slow" compared to any center in the country...or a PF like PEDERSEN is "too slow" compared to other PFs in the country....or a SF like HARMON is "too slow" compared to other SGs in the country.....

Moreover, even after WIGGINS graduates, the Cardinal:

1) still has the most number of "high impact" players (i.e., 5-star players per hoopgurlz.com ratings) in the PAC 10, in:

- APPEL, who just happens to be the #1 center, and #3 overall recruit, from the HS Class of 2006, and one of the top centers in the country as a college freshman last season;

- PEDERSEN, who just happens to be the #2 forward, and #4 overall recruit, from the HS Class of 2007, and was the best performer for the West team at the 2007 McDonald's All-American game;

- POHLEN, who is the #22 overall recruit from the HS Class of 2007

2) has the most number of combined 5-star and 4-star rated players from the combined Classes of 2006-2007 in the entire country with SEVEN (7), in APPEL, PEDERSEN, POHLEN (5-star), and HONES, HARRISON, MURPHY, CIMINO (4-star);

and

3) has the most number of McDonald's All-Americans from the combined HS Classes of 2006 and 2007 in the entire country with FIVE (5) in APPEL, HARRISON (2006) and PEDERSEN, POHLEN, CIMINO (2007)

Having said all of that, I don't think Stanford will be demoted to the WNIT in the near future.....

I would not compare Murphy with Dymond SIMON. Dymond Simon is super fast. She is more in the Lorin Dixon, Shannon Bobbit, Danielle Robinson category. The only guard that Stanford has with that kind of quickness is Cissy Pierce.

I don't think you need to have players who are super fast to win. I don't think anyone was giving out any track medals to players like Larry Bird. Last I looked Larry Bird seemed to do ok.

Also you mention players that other schools are recruiting. I would think it does not count unless you sign the players first. I thought that Oregon State was really a reach. :D

Well I guess we will see about LaRoche next year.

I hear she is more like 5'6" or 5'7".
Laroche will probably lead the team out of the locker. That honor goes to the smallest player

I remember last year Cimino was 6'5". Now she is 6'3"
Heights have a way of changing in girls basketball.

Maybe the girls were wearing heels when you saw them ;)

I think ahley Cimino will be good for Stanford....I heard she has a great 3 pt shot.

Stanford Needs Nneka...I really hope she chooses Stan........If Boothe commits to stan than i dont see nneka committing . I think if any other post commits to stan than nneka wont.

FSU's so called upset of Stanford was no an accident, but a good post Wiggins
indicator. You Stanford fans should wait until they can get out of their own gym in post
season before saying how great they are, it doesn't matter how many "happy meal"
players they have!!!

Well if you could say that about Stanford , You should say the same about Duke.
Oklahoma & Ohio State. Not sure which is worse loosing to Marist or Florida State.

The funny thing about the NCAAs is that only one team wins it all. Does it really matter if you lose in the beginning or the end of the tournament?

I'm not hearing anyone say Stanford is so great. But if you insult the players which seems to be your M.O. people are going to defend them.

What team are you rooting for ?

I don't understand why that would be the case. I see every player under the sun committing to Tenn. Does not seem to be a concern there as to which position is full. Why is Stanford only allowed so many bigs ?

Anyway I would think that Boothe and Nneka play different positions. I see Boothe as a 5. Nneka as a 3 or 4

I don't think I insult the players and certainly don't intend to. There are two many late
bloomers, people without good coaches or trainers until they get to college or people who
lack confidence in club ball to predict success or failure in college. Pointing out teams
with 5-star players or McDonald's All-Americans doesn't necessary mean as much as it
used to with the expanding talent base nationwide. Stanford is very good, but I don't
think changes are being made as to type players to get back to national championship
level which is the goal of every team at Stanford. I would like to see more coverage of
other western teams and players nationwide. It seems like Stanford gets all the national
press west of the Big Twelve.

Some comments: LaRocque seems as tall as Joe says. Yes Charlesi you do insult the Stanford players. Appreciate you don't like Stanford, but please check the HG ratings of incoming classes to see where Oregon St, cal, etc are outrecruiting Stanford.

There's not a harder school in the country offering athletic scholarships in the country than Stanford, really doesn't matter if you believe it , want to believe or whatever.

OTOH, I posted last summer that Cimino appears 6-4 to 6-5. I stood near her, but I appear to be shinking. I saw her play last week against Kristen Newlin and Brooke Smith and Ashley is 6-3, which is what the newly released Stanford roster also says.
