Hey Class of 2011…Phone calls from the college coaches are just around the corner and it’s important to know what the limits are in terms of them calling you or your family…Hopefully you’ve been taking advantage of the fact that the NCAA doesn’t limit calls from you allowing you to get to know the schools that have shown an interest in your future…The limits and guidelines are in place to protect you and your family from being overwhelmed by call after call from college recruiters and interfering with your academic and personal life…Calls will start in just a couple of weeks so you’ll want to be aware of the time frame and limits
From April 8th until the end of the month coaches can call you one time
During the month of May they again are permitted one call to you or your family
On or after June 1st through June 20th they are permitted one call
Between June 21st and the 30th they get another call
In the month of July they are permitted a total of three calls with no more than one per week. The twist here are the two separate 10 day recruiting periods in which no calls are permitted from them or from you for that matter. This year’s calendar gives them four short periods to get those three calls in.
They can get one in the 1st through the 3rd, another the 4th or 5th which gives them a chance to get two of their three in before the first 10 day evaluation period which again prohibits all communication.
After that period they have the 16th and 17th to get another in followed by the 18th through the 21st for their last opportunity of the month. The second evaluation period follows through the last day of the month.
Beginning with August, coaches are permitted one call per week the rest of the way in the recruiting process.
Again, other than those two 10 day periods in July, you and your family can call them as often as you like.
We ran a column last year with some thoughts surrounding phone calls and this time of year that are still relevant and important for juniors. Just keep in mind any dates were from last year’s calendar.

The junior class has obviously been pretty busy already with all the commitments but the large majority is just getting busy narrowing their lists, taking their time and exploring their options. As always, keep in mind that there’s no hurry. It’s important to get it right and not become one of the ever increasing number of transfers that made an early decision without doing all the homework they might have.
