All the leaves are gone (but they WERE brown)

And the sky is white (but it WAS grey)

First round TOC scores;

Day 1 tough for the young guns. #2 BOLINGBROOK, #16 upstart NORCROSS and the talented but very young ST. MARYS (AZ) all took lessons today in humility as all three took blowout losses in their '09 desert debut.

---------------------------------------

ST. MARYS (CAL) 79 NORCROSS (GA) 55 > The RAMS controls throughout as CHELSEA GRAY scores 23.

MEMPHIS CENTRAL (TN) 69 HD WOODSON (DC) 40 > CENTRAL dominates 'Razor-less WARRIOR team.

---------------------------------------

MT. LEBANON (PA) 51 THUNDERRIDGE (COL) 37 > MADISON CABLE leads the BLUE DEVILS with 19 points.

BREA (CAL) 53 ST. MARYS (AZ) 32 > The WILDCATS hold the home team to 2 points and stake 19 point lead in first 7 minutes. KELSEY HARRIS scores 17.

---------------------------------------

POLY (CAL) 57 BOLINGBROOK 35 > POLY pressure too much in this stunner.

CHRIST THE KING (NY) 53 DILLARD (FLA) > Big bounce back for the ROYALS over Florida contender as BRIA SMITH scores 23.

---------------------------------------

RIVERDALE BAPTIST 55 SOUTH EUGENE 45 (ORE) > The CRUSADERS roll on despite having one returner among the first seven of last years team.

MATER DEI (CAL) 78 HILLSBORO (TN) 30 > #1 plays like #1. LEWIS scores 33, 24 in the first half.

Could be an All-Cali coronation in the final four.

Which reminded me of the time I....

Stopped into a church

I passed along the way

and got down on my knees

and began to pray

Pardon me, I was California dreamin' there for a minute while I look out at this winter wonderland falling from the sky.

Thanks to all for the updates from TOC.
Basketball junkies need their daily fix.
With Cal Swish winning Nike Nationals and now a "possible" semi finals of all California teams, west coast might be the top dog.

I planned on going to the Brea v MD re-match game in January. Now it might be the re-re-match.

Hey Mamba
Those song lyrics in your post, I think they were from a famous group from years ago. Wasnt it the Mamba's and the Papa's? :D

Nice.

OC, I think this TOC thing may be answer to the BCS-type conumdrum that has the top 4 Cali teams spread among 3 divisions and preventing this possible final four showdown from ever happening in the great state of California. MATER DEI and ST. MARYS have yet to be challenged, POLY is as hot as a firecracker and BREA seems to have adjusted to life without HARTMAN. All were expected to be powerhouses again as I had all 4 finish in the top 15 in last years final rankings and all returning most of their critical pieces.

ST. MARYS overcame early losses to KENTWOOD and CLOVIS WEST and another to CARDINAL O'HARA in the desert before going on their run including the crucial win over SACRED HEART. The RAMS finished #5 while BREA and MATER DEI finished at #7 and #9 respectively after the WILDCATS win over the MONARCHS in the SoCal regional. POLY meanwhile bounced back off of 2 TOC losses to finish #15 to go with their Cali-D1 championship. ST. MARYS has the best backcourt in the country who also happen to have big game experience. MATER DEI and POLY are arguably the two most talented teams in the country, and though the loss of SOUTHALL was thought to diminish that capacity, the JACKRABBITS have bounced on. The loss of HARTMAN was a major blow to the WILDCATS who have recovered other than a knockdown early to OAK RIDGE. OAK RIDGE, by the way, faces MO HAMBLEN WEST in the first round of the second session of the TOC in what may be a matchup of the two top teams in that 8 team bracket.

--------------------------------------------------

The Golden state is representing no doubt, with the possible daily double tomorrow and a 24-5 record against non-Cali comp on day one. Most were against fellow west coast teams including many against the home state reps. Arizona teams finished 5-13 yesterday. The east contingent actually represented pretty well going 3-1 in the Mike Smith Division with MT. LEBANON beating a top 5 in the southwest in THUNDERRIDGE, CTK downing DILLARD and RIVERDALE BAPTIST getting past SOUTH EUGENE, who went 2-1 in the Nike Northwest earlier this month. The lone loss for the eastern seaboard was the HD WOODSON loss to MEMPHIS CENTRAL, very much expected without RANSFORD.

MT .LEBANON deserved some lofty status after dispatching CARDINAL O'HARA in their home state's final after the LIONS left the desert last year as king of the jungle. RIVERDALE BAPTIST was thought to be rebuilding with 6 of their top 7 players from last years team moving on. Coach DIANE RICHARDSON, 'the Queen D', has been brought back to BAPTIST after four years removed from going 142-20 from '99-05. RICHARDSON spent three years as a assistant in college, with a year at American and two at Maryland. She if nothing else will get the CRUSADERS to play hard as they work on their chemistry. CHRIST THE KING, like RIVERDALE, has gotten knocked down in this young season, but posted a nice win over DILLARD. 'The Tower of Power', aka HD WOODSON, has lost their tower and a pair of 4-year guards off of last years team and played without their lone returning star yesterday. So not a bad showing for the region, especially with only MT. LEBANON ranked among the first ten in the region.

sometime earlier, before themamba stopped into a church (note-if your thinking Tarantino-like with the back and forth, you are on point)

(themambas trusty assistant) > C'mon now it's a quarter to six we got a 7:30 flight

(themamba) > mmm, mumbling*, yeah

(tmta) > Yo mamb,... mamb, mamb

(themamba) > Yeah I hear you dog, I hear you, aight 7:30

(tmta) > Yo take down this information

(themamba) > Ain't no pen.

(tmta) > Tell your girl to remember it or somethin'

(themamba) > Aight honey, yeah write this down

(tmta) > Aight, ummm, flight five-oh-four

(themamba) > flight five-oh-four

(tmta) > Leavin' Kennedy.

(themamba) > mumbling * Kennnnnedy.

(tmta) > On to the LAX.

(themamba) > Oh ! CALI ?

As the state of Arizona in conjunction with Nike of course, shows the CIF how to hold a California state championship, the golden state shines bright as the four heavy hitters from Cali' advance on to the TOC final four. But these west coast powers didn't skateboard in or skate in or skate anything. They put on their cleats and dug deep to keep it strictly Cali'.

Credit to the victors but also to MEMPHIS CENTRAL who hung on to ST. MARYS until the final seconds before succumbing, 76-73. A wild one that had ST. MARYS with a 42-38 halftime margin and all tied at 56 going into the final period before the RAMS squeaked it out. CHELSEA GRAY and AFURE JEMRIGBE both scored 20 while sophomore NINA DAVIS scored 24 for CENTRAL. #44 BREA held off MT. LEBANON, 58-47 and faces off against #3 ST. MARYS in Mondays semifinal game. The Cali' '09 D-III champ versus the Cali' '09 D-II champ.

#1 MATER DEI held off a young CRUSADER team from RIVERDALE BAPTIST, 66-56, after the CRUSADERS had cut an 18 point first half lead down to 3 with 6 to play. KALEENA MOSQUEDA LEWIS came up big for the MONARCHS scoring 16 of her 25 in the decisive fourth quarter. #5 POLY wanted a cracker and got it from CHRIST THE KING in a classic head-cracker before putting away the ROYALS in the final seconds.

(keeping it Tarantinoian, we move to the third part, which is actually the second part chronilogically, of the whole Kennedy-to-LAX, on my knees in a church situation. This ties it all together and explains why themamba opened himself up to the church- or for the pc crowd, your house of worship, if wether indeed you imbibe or not- to begin with and began with that early phone call from his trusty assistant.)

So after that morning phone call and after travelling across the heartland, I walked straight off that tarmac and suddenly I realized...

It's the edge of the world

And all of Western civilization

The sun may rise in the East

At least it settles in it's final location

It's understood that Hollywood

sells Calfornication.

So you know the rest

I stopped into a church....

TOC 2nd day wrapup;

BOLINGBROOK (ILL) came back bucking in day 2 as the RAMS put away DILLARD (FLA) behing MORGAN TUCK who scored 28 points. The RAMS will face SOUTH EUGENE (ORE) who beat HILLSBORO (TN), 50-32.

On the top side of the dark side, NORCROSS (GA) toppled HD WOODSON, 62-51, behind KAELA DAVIS who scored 22 points. The DEVILS will face THUNDRRIDGE (COL) who held off a spunky ST. MARYS (AZ) squad, 57-53. The winner of these two games will meet the winner of the other bracket for 9th place.

In the winners bracket, Cal D-I state champ POLY plays CAL D-II runner-up MATER DEI while CAL d-II state champ BREA takes on Cal D-III champ ST. MARY'S.

----------------------------------------------------------

the Mike Desper Division;

The Desper Division is considered a bit like the Cotton Bowl, still quality teams with significant games, just not the BCS in pagentry and hoopla. It is also played different in that the first day is a play-in day in that you play for seed. One loss has you still in it to win it.

SACRAMENTO (7-0) reached the final four of the Desper as the DRAGONS got past BUENA and will now face OREGON CITY (7-0) in the semifinals. The DRAGONS have been led by BRITTANY SHINE who has averaged 16.2 a game this season while KYRA DUNN has averaged 10.2 and KATHI SALINAS averages 10.8 points while hitting over 50% from the three. The PIONEEERS have ASHLEIGH ANDERSON, averaging 16.6 points and has made 18 3's so far this season. Seniors 6'1 BRITTANY KNIGHTON and TAYLOR WARD have averaged 12.8 and 12.2 respectively.

The other final four matchup has BISHOP GORMAN (NV) who dropped the opener to OREGON CITY by 3, but stood off WESTBURY CHRISTIAN, facing HIGHLANDS RANCH (COL), who topped TOLLESON (AZ). The GAELS (6-2) from GORMAN took an early season loss to MODESTO CHRISTIAN (CAL) while the 'RANCH' took a pair of l's early to Cali foes, SANTIAGO and VISTA MURRIETA. The FALCONS from HIGHLAND RANCH has been lead in scoring by junior KATELYN MC DANIEL who is averaging 16.3 a game.

---------------------------------------------------------

In the Gray Division, the Poulander Weedeater Bowl, if you will, has an all Cali contingent in it's final four as well. HARVARD WESTLAKE (CAL) moved to 6-1 with a win over VILLA PARK (CAL). WESTLAKE now faces BELLARMINE JEFFERSON (CAL), aka BELL JEFF, who beat CHANDLER (AZ0 ,71-55. The GUARDS from BELL JEFF will have to contain NICOLE HUNG, who averages 16 for the WOLVES. The lake'S only loss was to MATER DEI, by 37.

VANDEN (CAL), 25-3 a year ago, dispatched SANTA MONICA, 57-43, and will face CANYON SPRINGS (CAL). 6'0 junior ERIMMA MARIKWA averages 15 points and 7 rebounds a game for the VIKINGS while senior JAZ MILLER averages 14 a game. The VIKINGS werew eliminated by SACRAMENTO in last years Cali playoffs. The COUGARS from CANYON SPRINGS, 25-8 a year ago and 6-2 this season, is led by T' EARA LAUDERMILL, averaging 18.5 points a game and AMBER SMITH who averages 15 a game.

Bell Jeff versus Harvard Westlake is a great rivalry match up, hopefully it lives up to it. Bell jeff is leading on the recruiting front in LA, while Harvard is probably on it's last seniors and will drop off after this year unable to challenge Bell with the younger and incoming club players.

In the winners bracket, Cal D-I state champ POLY plays CAL D-II runner-up MATER DEI while CAL d-II state champ BREA takes on Cal D-III champ ST. MARY'S.

Would'nt Carondelet be the D-II runner-up since they lost the state title?

Gotta hit themamba up with a 't' on that one. Technically you are correct, CARONDELET was the state runner-up and I omitted SoCal before runner-up on MATER DEI. So themamba had that one coming, and you gave me a warning earlier in the game with the travesty part. My assistants begged me not to banter back and forth with the referees, especially the Dickie Bavetta-types that will 't' you up quick, the kind that watch you and not the game, the anxious ones, they said. I said no, this guy is absolutely right and instead of sending out a memo saying I regret my transgressions I'll just confront the demons head on and accept my mistake. Plus he's named after the phillipians formambas sake.

BREA shut down MATER DEI pretty well in the SoCal final, limiting them to 24 points over 3 quarters and winning 44-38. BREA followed that by dismantling CARONDELET in the state final, taking a 4-3 deficit and turning it into a 31-11 rout with three to go in the first half and making championship status and runner-up status, academic. KELSEY HARRIS led the WILDCATS with 25 while ERICA PAYNE had 18 points and 9 rebounds for the COUGARS. The key for the WILDCATS was limiting RADONOVICH and HUFFMAN to 10 points between them.

Me personally, themamba, I would have taken the semifinalist over the runner-up if asked.

Nice win, this year, over BISHOP O'DOWD, 74-70, over the weekend for CARONDELET, who, according to sources, have a jamboree lined up.

note- I love your frankness, you had me spitting out my coffee when you said and I quote, "I have no idea who SANTIAGO has on their roster". Classic.

Merry Christmas Phil !

Santiago really only has Lister twins from WCP, 1 going to Vandy other to Boise State but full of upperclassmen. They are as feisty as they come, just like many of the socal teams and battle tested, but you just have to look at the talent in socal to see why Brea blew out the Norcal team. And I agree the real semi was in the south and Brea exposed MDS easier shedule last year.

The top two teams in the land meet tomorrow when #1 MATER DEI takes on #3 ST. MARYS in the TOC championship in Chandler. BREA will rise from #44 into the top 25 and played like a top 5 team despite it's earlier loss to OAK RIDGE, who will also debut in the top 25.

Two top 25's that took early blows in the desert to fellow top 25 teams, BOLINGBROOK and NORCROSS rebounded again today to pit themselves against each other for the 9th place game. In the Desper, it will be OREGON CITY meeting HIGHLANDS RANCH in the final. OREGON CITY held off SACRAMENTO in a thriller,55-52, while HIGHLANDS RANCH beat BISHOP GORMAN by 11, 71-60.
