The BREEZY BISHOP CLASSIC BALTIMORE,MD DEC 11 & 12
http://www.westerndovesbasketball.com/
Kudos to the selection committee of the Breezy Bishop on not only extending invitations to the areas elite programs but bringing in some heavyweights in GERMANTOWN (PA) and PEDDIE SCHOOL (NJ), the WCAC powers HOLY CROSS and BMAC, Washington Post top 5 perennials RIVERDALE BAPTIST and HD WOODSON, not to mention ST. FRANCES and KEOUGH along with the big 3 in the city (WESTERN, CITY and DIGITAL). This public offering also features privates GOOD COUNSEL and SPALDING, two teams who consistently stay in the top third of competetive leagues. Add in LARGO, the 3A semifinalist and another pair of teams that should battle in PG4A in BOWIE and CROSSLAND. POLY should be the fourth best team in the city and another baptist, ST JOHN from WEST ISLIP who has had a nice recent history and although losing post CHRISTINE HUBER to RUTGERS, figure to be competitive. Thats 18 of the 26 teams confirmed, leaving PRINCETON DAY (NJ), MILLER (VA), HILL (PA), LINCOLN (NY) and FORD (NY) as 'Charm City' infiltrators looking to make a mark and three locals (MERCY, FREDERICK and RANDALLSTOWN) looking to hang with the big girls.
This classic features 8 of my top 11 teams in Maryland and 12 of my top 18 including four of the first five. As far as regionally, there are 6 of the top 25 in the east regional rankings and two others that recieved consideration and sitting right outside the top 25.
RIVERDALE finished #8 in themambas '09 rankings (final rankings before KEOUGH game in which the CRUSADERS were missing 2 starters) with incredible blowout wins including by 48 over nationally ranked POTTERS HOUSE, by 42 over 4A runner-up BLAKE and 39 over 2A champ CITY. The CRUSADERS beat then top 5 POLY (CA) at the TOC and beat OAK HILL (VA) twice in double-digits. 'The Vet', ATIARA FRANKLIN, and 'Lil Twin', TIERRA HAWKINS, headline a cast of thousands... Ok maybe not thousands but it damn sure feels like it when you take a look at their guard rotation despite losing SAUNDERS and JOHNSON. Three very talented transfers join 'Jello', MUNGO and several underclassmen to make another crusade at RIVERDALE.
GERMANTOWN (31-0) finished ranked #12 in themambas national poll, won the Inter-Academic title for the 11th straight year and return MAGGIE LUCAS (BELLES, PENN STATE) among a talented cast. The PATS won the NAPLES DAILY NEWS tournament over a pair of Floridian ranked schools and beat fellow commonwealthian DOWNINGTOWN EAST in the final and added another trio of wins over rival NOTRE DAME ACADEMY. GERMANTOWN also has talented junior 5'11 wing ALEXA GALLAGHER and senior 6'0 post TORY THIEROLF coming back. PEDDIE SCHOOL (24-2) finished #49th and had quality wins over Georgia heavyweight MARIETTA, South Carolina's 4-time champ LOWER RICHLAND and Florida power PARKWAY. The FALCONS two losses last season were to the aforementioned GERMANTOWN team and Georgia AAAA runner-up FAYETTE COUNTY. The FALCONS also like the sound of 'belles' and like the sound of the very talented 6'3 Duke-bound HALEY PETERS returning to the FALCON nest. Point guard ALEX SMITH will be the the conductor for the FALCONS who also have several wings such as BRIDGETTE McKNIGHT to help them soar.
Of the local contingent, the two top 'Charm City' teams from a year ago, ST. FRANCES and SETON KEOUGH are in and return Franny's returning All-Mets 5'4 SHATYRA 'Lil Mama' HAWKES (XAVIER,OH) and BREANNA 'Breezie' HUTCHENS (AMERICAN U) and the GATORS returning All-Met junior AMBER SINGLETARY who made her presence felt on ESPN at the NHIS in April when she poured in 17 against RIVERDALE BAPTIST. DEANNA HARMON joins HAWKES and a pair of talented sophomores in the unit affectionetly known as 'the ant hill mob'. 'The mob' applies constant pressure and chaos. Joining HUTCHENS up front is another of three sophomores looking to play at the next level. KEOUGH has two junior prospect forwards in 6'0 ACHIRI ADE and 6'4 LIZ BROWN to give the GATORS some size up front and a pair of transfers in CHELSEA DUKES and point guard AJA WALLPHER who will be playing at the next level next season. SPALDING, 3rd in the IAAM for a second year, has returning All-Met junior MAGGIE MORRISON back to run the show and lead another trio of talented juniors. WESTERN may have the deepest teams in the eastern region that includes a pair of '13 recruits among it's dozen and it's just a question of wether the DOVES put it all together determining if they laugh or cry. The two other city schools, CITY COLLEGE and DIGITAL HARBOR are coming off state champioships and feature two top 10 '10 Maryland recruits in LASHAY TAFT (EXODUS) and ASIA LOGAN (PITTSBURGH) respectively.
BISHOP MCNAMARA and HOLY CROSS figure to be contenders in one of the nations toughest leagues (WCAC) that GOOD COUNSEL took last season. The MUSTANGS are loaded with prospects and the TARTANS who were runner-up in the WCAC last year have several themselves. HD is HD and have the talented RANIKA RANSFORD (GEORGIA) leading a quartet of sophomore WARRIORS to battle. The WARRIORS have won 5 straight DC city titles.
These matchups in this classic figure to be anything but a 'Breeze'.
