Some of these girls are strictly shooters; some get to the basket; some can do both; some are straight scorers; some can post up, some can play point, and some can do both. But, the RBR sees all of them as two-guards for college.
The RBR's baker's dozen of shooting guards, regardless of class, to check out right now, in the MD/DC/VA region (in alphabetical order):

1. Tiara Butler, 5'9", 2010, North Point/Waldorf, Md;
2. Brittany Campbell, 5'11", 2008, Brookville/Lynchburg, Va. (committed to Liberty);
3. Tonya Clark, 5'9", 2008, Princess Anne/Virginia Beach, Va.;
4. Kristin Coles, 5'8", 2008, Notre Dame Academy/Middleburg, Va.;
5. Brittany Crowell, 5'9", 2008, Gwynn Park/Brandywine, Md. (committed to James Madison);
6. JoNiquia Guilford, 5'10", 2008, Woodrow Wilson/Portsmouth, Va.;
7. Tiora Hackley, 5'8", 2008, Oak Hill Academy/Mouth of Wilson, Va.;
8. Elashier Hall, 5'10", 2009, Eleanor Roosevelt/Greenbelt, Md.;
9. Shanel Harrison, 5'11", 2008, Good Counsel/Olney, Md.;
10. Sonia Johnson, 5'9", 2008, Heritage/Newport News, Va.;
11. Grace Mashore, 5'9", 2008, National Cathedral School for Girls/Washington, D.C.;
12. Tierra Ruffin-Pratt, 5'10", 2009, T.C. Williams/Alexandria, Va.;

i think Bernisha Pinkett and Patrice Johnson both fit in this catagory. i seen both defend the 2s and 3s in this area and they both have gotten better at it. JMO

Those are all good Shooting Guards IH but if age is not a factor, I think we are missing one that I saw now for the second time...she plays for the FFS team (#14) that Aggie coaches. From what I understand, she is new to the area. She is a complete game changer. I'll try to get her name tomorrow.

You beat me to the name, thanks. I know she is still a little young but she is one of the up and coming stars of the area. Do you know what HS she is going to next year?

What changes need to be made to the orginal list? My vote for number one on this list is Lacey Hall of E. Roosevelt.
She is not the best shooter but boy is she a winner...:cool:

Mr IH can you give us a bakers dozen minus the 2008 class? For most purposes these girls hs playing days are over and they are college freshman as far as it relates to competitive basketball. Thanks

No disrespect intended smoke but I would put TRP ahead of her.

The ranks of scoring guards are kinda thin this time around, sports fans, in the MD/DC/VA region. Yeah, there are a lot of girls running around jacking shots, and making a few of them; there are a lot of girls working out with these big-ticket basketball trainers, and bragging about it.
But the sad fact is that there ain't that many girls in the D-M-V who have shown a true desire to score, and an understanding of scoring as well; and furthermore, the ABILITY to score, under a diverse set of conditions, AT THE ELITE HIGH SCHOOL AND/OR CLUB LEVELS, is somewhat lacking at the guard position, in our region.
Of course, this is the IH's opinion; the IH could be wrong, sports fans. What do you think?

The baker's dozen that the IH is looking at right now, at the shooting-guard position (in order of height):
- LaShay Taft, 5'7", 2010, City College/Baltimore, Maryland
- Bernisha Pinkett, 5'7", 2009, H.D. Woodson/Washington, D.C.
- Kalia Johnson, 5'9", 2011, Thomas Dale/Chester, Virginia
- Tyaunna Marshall, 5'9", 2010, Elizabeth Seton/Bladensburg, Maryland
- Tracy King, 5'9", 2010, Mount Vernon/Alexandria, Virginia
- Ashley Davis, 5'9", 2009, Arundel/Gambrills, Maryland
- Tiara Butler, 5'10", 2010, North Point/Waldorf, Maryland
- TaShaunda Rodgers, 5'10", 2009, King's Fork/Suffolk, Virginia
- Jacqueline Brewer, 5'11", 2010, Handley/Winchester, Virginia
- Candace Bond, 5'11", 2009, Riverdale Baptist/Upper Marlboro, Maryland
- Tierra Ruffin-Pratt, 5'11", 2009, T.C. Williams/Alexandria, Virginia
- Elashier Hall, 5'11", 2009, Eleanor Roosevelt/Greenbelt, Maryland
- Lauren Buford, 6'0", 2010, St. John's College/Washington, D.C.

An interesting thirteen at the SG position, sports fans...

For decades "SG" has stood for "shooting guard" and you even labled these young ladies as such yourself o' great one! Are these young ladies truly shooting guards or "SCORING" guards?

Shooters and scorers are two totally different players IMO. Out of these 13 young ladies I've seen 10 of em at work and albeit talented, none are shooters. B. Pinkett(HDW) has been the most consistent shooter over the past year. A. Davis (AHS) has a pretty stroke as most lefties do but not very consistent, more steaky to me. Shooters IMO make you say "damn" before the ball leaves his/her hands when you know you're late on a rotation to him/her.

Good list of players but I wasn't feelin the SG label. All of these young ladies can surely fill up an offensive stat sheet. Just had to vent a little. One of those days!

I would like to through another name out there for consideration. Courtney Cayard from HDW is a great shooter if that is what we are talking about. She will make you pay if left open. Shooting has always been her strong point. Courtney has been working hard in the gym and is becoming a complete scoring guard.

We are still discussing hs girls basketball? What planet do the girls you are referring to come from or outside of 1 or 2 players nationally and that's a maybe does what your describing even exist?

A hah! Notice I was very careful with my gender and used him/her. You are correct though, those type of players are far in between in the women's game. I think we had a few this past year, Morgan Wrightson (ND), Nicole Krusen (GV), Brittany Crowell (GP), Alex Chilli (MoCo) and some others I'm sure I haven't seen.

No infractions here COP, just sharing what was on my mind at the time. We talk about how important it is to have a legitimate point guard on the team or a serious post with some inside presence but just as important as those two players is a "shooter".

Hl I did indeed see the gender bender in your post. The player your describing is a special type I would like to see that on the hs level more. I was just sarcatically trying to say that under that description of shooting guard we would have to do away with the term for now in hs girls BB. These "shooters" are all streaky they hit 3 in a row at certain times but miss a whole lot 5 for 15 from deep can look like you are on a threat depending on when you hit your 5. And for the most part these shots are wide open and they are given time to set up by way of screen or slow rotation. I want to see the kid with the defender in her face will tripple threat jab twice to.back you off and create space and with only 2-3 feet of cushion pull up without a dribble and nail the long ball and it ain't a doggone thing you can do about it.

PGC & HL what you are talking about and describing is coming and there are a lot of young ladies out there that have all of that. The issue is that a lot of the hs and spring/summer coaches won't let the ladies get off. I am not putting the blame on the lower level coaches solely, it is an issue at the college and pro level.
For example, Nikki Blue for the Mystics, she can break ankles and has mad dog handle and has had it since the 9th grade. Her coaches won't let her get off.
The women's game is changing, but slowly and it is showing up at the college level. Matee' and the Rutgers guards, the Coppin State guards for example. As soon as a lot of the coaches at all levels stop being ' sexist ' and thinking these female ballers can't do the same thing as the guys, you see what you are looking for and the ladies game will truly be more athletic and entertaining. For example any shooter gets paid for making open shots at any level. When you are practicing, you take 500 open shots with no one on you, so it really is no big deal. But come game time the play says pass the ball when in fact you are wide open. What is that about? We all preach Triple-threat, but never use the first threat of shooting, the women break out into the dribble thing or look to pass cause that is the play. So much for the 3-T.
BB is a sport and most sports have athletes participate. In BB this athleticism is combined with individual creativity starting from the 3-T if us coaches allow it. Speed the game up, let the players make decisions, let them get off, let them shoot when they are open, run plays to get players open 1-on-1 and use your 3-T, jab step, head-shoulder fake, ball fake, reverse pivot, one dribble, pull up and bust your defender up. That's ballin'.
It is coming cause the young ladies are watching and imitating what they see. They realize they can do this or that if allowed by the COACH.
I believe that the IH is using these criteria when looking at players and the fact they don't display it, certainly don't mean they ain't got it. It is the future. That is one reason that the university is after guards from the DMV.
