ATLANTA, GA. -- From the moment the opening tip off took place for the three divisions of the Southern Premier Hoops Spring Classic, high powered teams showcasing high powered talent made the competition level extremely high and college coaches and fans extremely happy.
The heat was on during the Platinum Division’s championship game as Arkansas’ New Life Hawks tenacity challenged the South Carolina Lady 76ers to the final buzzer. Advancing to the title game, the Lady 76ers beat the Mississippi Warriors, Memphis Lady Bobcats, and the Wallace Prather Celtics while the Hawks knocked out the Atlanta Celtics, FBC Georgia Black and the Carolina Rise on its rise to the top of the brackets.
During the matchup, individual players showcased incredible defense as demonstrated by 76ers’ long armed Sarah Greene who recorded 6 blocks in the first half contributing to the 76ers half time lead 22-12.
The second half began with New Life jumping on the 76ers with a man to man press cutting the deficit to 4 points at the 11 minute mark. The high pressured press cost the 76ers several turnovers forcing a timeout to be called. Coming out of the timeout with a new game plan and enthusiasm, the 76ers rallied to regain control and push the score back up to 11 battling to the end to a 10 point victory 44 to 34. The Lady 76ers were led in scoring by Co-MVP’s starting guard tandem of Khadijah Sessions and Aarika Judge both with 10 points each. New Life Hawks were led by Chrisstassia Walters with 8 points and Erin Peoples with 8 points
In the Gold Division the CBC/Next Level 16U Red beat the Douglasville Tigers 62 - 50 paced by Katie Collins' 27 points and Aziza Mays' 20. The Lady Tigers took an early lead and held onto it until it was six minutes left on the clock when a crucial foul was called against them in addition to a technical foul which gave CBC a 4 point swing and also the momentum it needed to advance. The Douglasville Tigers' leading scorer was Kristina Wells who led them with 12 in the 62 – 50 loss.
Fans were on the edge of their seats all the way to the end of regulation during the Silver Division Championship game. The South Carolina Lady 76ers 14U Red had to fight to the final buzzer to hold off a very determined and very talented CBC/Next Level 15U. The Lady 76ers jumped out to a 28-20 halftime lead, paced by Amber Campbell scoring six points on her way to a team high 14 points. CBC/Next Level came roaring back in the second half to take a 49-48 lead with 16 seconds left in the game. Amber Campbell got the ball with 10 seconds on the clock, drove hard from the right wing, fouled on the way up and hit both free throws to give the 76ers a 1 point lead. With 10 seconds left, CBC/Next Level tried to get the ball into the post which was being dominated by Elizabeth Reeves who led the team with 16 points and was unsuccessful due to the 76ers defensive quickness. Chryee Lockhart was also a major contributor for CBC who chipped in with 12 points.
The Southern Premier Hoops Spring Classic showcased a diversity of a high powered talent on the adidas circuit as the 2009 travel season kicked off in the East. With equally strong adidas teams battling in Indiana and Las Vegas, it will be interesting to see who will rise to the top in July at the highly anticipated national event, adidas Hoosier Nation Hardwood Championships.
