As we shovel away January during this Ice Age, it's a chance to forsee the future and forcast what February will bring in regards to the playoffs. In 1A, it's more of a back to the future situation with the '08 FINAL FOUR participants (POCOMOKE, ALLEGANY, DIGITAL HARBOR and SURRATSVILLE) at the head of the class along with an up and coming JOPPATOWNE team. Those five teams contain the future '09 1A CHAMP, in which last year brought us POCOMOKE and ASHLEY BISHOP's thrilling winner in the final seconds and a very jubilant WARRIOR nation went home to the EASTERN SHORE with all the glory and the title.
This year only few of the names have changed, such as BISHOP, BARBER at the 'VILLE and the GETTY sisters from the CAMPERS. Junior 6'0 ASIA LOGAN is the star for the DIGITAL RAMS, who bring back everyone from last years semifinalist team. If the RAMS can find some balance by getting her inside as well as her preferred outside game, the RAMS may be the team to beat. Point guard CHANAE SHORTER, who had an excellent FINAL FOUR game last year, returns to the 'VILLE for her senior year and this year is joined by DEANNA GROSS. POCOMOKE brings back talented sophomore WHITNEY KING and is the cream of the crop from the SHORE in 1A. On the western panhandle it's still the CAMPERS and DETONIA DEGROSS leading the CAMPERS to a future campsite at the RAC. This year the mountain girls will look to damper that POCOMOKE fire. BRITTANY THORNTON leads a young JOPPATOWNE club in HARFORD.
DIGITAL (13-1) has beaten SURRATSVILLE (11-2) on the road early in December 54-43. This immediately after the RAMS got slaughtered by HD WOODSON, 71-32. They haven't lost since although they have yet to face CHARM CITY favorites WESTERN and CITY. The RAMS also have beaten mid-majors CATONSVILLE and RANDALLSTOWN by 11 and 9 respectively. POCOMOKE (13-0), according to my morse code remains undefeated on the SHORE and should be the EASTERN rep. The CAMPERS (12-2), lost one by venturing out and mountaineering in WEST VIRGINIA, and another to NORTHERN, in appropriately named ACCIDENT, MD. Comprehensive coverage is difficult to come by in the mountains, but by all indications, the CAMPERS are the choice in the WEST. JOPPATOWNE (12-2) had a very dissapointing loss to GLEN BURNIE, which gives question to any title hopes, and another to UCBAC heavyweight FALLSTON by 21. J'TOWNE though has won 10 of 11, including one against rival ABERDEEN. SURRATSVILLE, has the one loss to DIGITAL and another 33 point loss to LARGO, to go with two wins over mid-majors CROSSLAND and MILLFORD MILL. So as the 'MOKE looks to go back to the future, the quartet of the others are looking for change they can finally believe in. These four better know their history, otherwise they are liable to repeat it. And thats a good thing for POCOMOKE, who have had tickets to the dance 10 times, including 9 without the crown before snatching the terra last year. SURRATSVILLE has been three times to the dance, including the last two years, never advancing to the final. ALLEGANY has 3 FINAL appearances, bringing the title back west along 70 in 2000. JOPPATOWNE has three appearances, with a three year run to the dance from '94-96 that failed to garner a title. DIGITAL HARBOR, established in the 21st century, made it's first appearance last year.
