View Full Version : Individual Rankings

I can't help but chuckle when I read some of this stuff because there is no logic behind it. Over the past 3 years, I have posted links and asked parents, coaches and players to send video in to HG if they wanted their kids ranked.

I am sure the main objective of most coaches, parents and players is to attend exposure events so their kids will be seen by colleges, which in turn saves them a ton of money in the long run"scholarships"

As far as rankings go, people who do the rankings can only go by what they see. I have said this before, Glenn Nelson saw my kid on a Hoops TV video from Basketball On The Bayou when she was in the 9th grade I believe, this is how she got ranked. Sometimes kids can be on the right team at the right time or the wrong team at the wrong time, my daughter was on West Coast Elite and that wasn't a good fit, I had sense enough to move her back.

Some people think that because you attend a certain school, this assures a certain ranking and in many cases thats true because I have seen some kids get picked for McDonalds and WBCA for that very reason however most of the folks go on what they see. I recall my daughter beingranked 298 by Dan Olsen when he covered Adidas, then ran by Mike White, which sets off something right there. I asked Dan his logic and he said because he hadn't seen her. This didn't and to this day doesn't make sense but I know what it was about.

Now saying a kid is going to a certain collehge makes them a top 100 player shows how little thought is put into some posts. D1 schoola are awarded 15 scholarships per year, which averages out to 3.75 per year, so using that formula, I guess all of the top 100 players would go to schools ranked in the top 30 each year and that makes no sense. I have always said, It ain't what you do, it's who you do it against, some folks get it, some don't.

There is alot of talk and hating in Houston, fans and even coaches making ignorant remarks about kids and their rankings and is sickens me to my stomach, especially when these folks haven't been on the circuit, haven't seen how their faves were used or seen the other players in action. A kid that plays for me, Nay Carter, went off againt a loaded West Coast Elite and a loaded Georgia Metro team and the kid went OFF in each game, scoring double digits in each. And because many of the folks making comments don't know what the hell they are talking about, WCE had the Gilbreath sisters, Ashley Gayle, Monique Oliver, Italee Lucas and Kelsey Bone. Metros had MAYA MOORE and 14 other D-ONE PLAYERS on their team. Did I mention she was finishing her FRESHMAN year, I guess not. After her sophomore year, she dropped 30 in the opening game against Michigan Crossover. The reason I mentioned these three teams is becuase they are SPONSORED by Nike, so you know they have some of the top players in the country and wear shoes that don't tear during the games, but that's another thread.

I already know we have kids in Texas that can play, kids in Houston, that can play and I actually get out and look at games and see talent, I always did, so I believe I can bring more to the table than folks who watch ONLY their kids games. I posted this link almost a year ago for another great guard fromm Houston.

Sim you know how it is down south in the 3rd coast,People always want to shine and if they can't shine they will downplay, hate on , any one trying to get something they want too. I alway tell people "You not the only with bright ideas but what are going to do with the ideas".The game has change since the late 80/early 90 it is different group of men(simp, wimp etc). My old school partner always gave guidance, You cannot tell them anything now. Keep droppin the science. The upcoming parents need to hear this info!hell i know i need it

I'll point to one thing in Simmie's story that I tell people who ask about rankings and playing on non-sponsored teams - like Nay, playing against a sponsored team with players who have been ranked for a few years can do as much for a kid as playing on that team. The best measurement is seeing how a player acts and reacts to stiff competition.

Guys it's alot of ignorance and jealousy in Houston. I hear and absorb so much that it sometimes make me want to throw up. An average player can look like a superstar against weak competition and a superstar can look average in the wrong system.

I dont know much about Texas basketball but I really agree with what you are saying about wbb in general. I think HG does a good job with their rankings but until they have 200 on staff to criss cross the country we have to rely on people from different areas like Sim to point out players who might overwise be overlooked. I am sure that there will be a college coach or coaches somewhere who will pick up on this player and some who wish they had.

This is grass roots basketball and as the womens game develops it is my hope that all these players who in play in obscurity will get recoqnized. Thanks to Chris and HG for at least providing the average fan with some player evaluations. Hopefully more people will start sending videos and tips about players to them so they can have more eyes out their in evaluating talent

If you notice this year in the college games a lot of good games have developed from lower Div 1 schools and some ranked teams who rely on this type of talent.

If you know what your looking at and how to look at it, it's not hard to spot a talented player even when they are playing against weak competition. Many people look at how many she scored or how many the player she was guarding scored as a bottom line and that can be misleading both ways. Doing layup drills against a weak player/team proves that you can make a layup, that's all, even if you made 20 of them that game. Hitting 6 three's (scoring 18) from the same spot while wide open because of they play ran, MAY tell me you can hit a wide open three, or it may just say you were hot that day. Now the kid that beat her girl off the dribble elevated and missed the pull up, then attacked the rack created contact and 1, nailed the 3 and a 2 with her foot on the line, double crossed and spin then found the open cutter, then did the same move the opposite way and dropped the floater or an up and under on the 6'3" post fluidly and finished with 10, in my book that is the kid I want, but then those who don't know any better will wonder how do you put that kid that scored 10 above my (lay up drill) girl that scored 40 or my (wide open 3's off screen) girl who scored 18? So many variables to consider outside how many did you score, I'm not easily impressed but I have seen some players from all over that made me get that tingley felling.

Sorry for invading your forum but this was interesting.

I gree with you however t's not a lot of people that really know what they are looking at. I often speak about a kid from Houston that averaged around 25ppg, had several 40 plus games and wasn't recruited, nor offered a scholarship by anyone. Her HS team wasn't good, she was the best player and took around 75% of her teams shots.

Thanks for coming over and spreading your knowledge.
