This season snuck up on me.
I'm trying to get excited. Maybe as it gets into full swing...
These look like good match ups too.
Am I reading this right. Are there 2 games being played @ West Springfield tonight?

Yeah, there were two games at WS as part of the Metro Challenge. Both ended up as blowouts as GC won 51-28 and WS won 51-26. No one shot the ball particularly well but the winning teams played aggressive ball and made a living off turnovers and offensive rebounds. The freshmen for WS had their moments. Westfield really struggled but I guess they played Paul VI closer a few days ago. WS and GC play at 7 on Saturday, it'll be interesting to see if the Spartans can give them a game.

Indian River beat King's Fork 61-47. Shanel Williams led the way with 19 pts, Chelisa Painter added 17 pts and controlled the paint with 6 emphatic blocks, and Kiara Avant added 14 pts. Tough shooting night for Suga Rodgers as she only had 14 pts.

Mount Vernon beat Jericho Christian 63-55 in overtime in a traditional Northern Region two-hour foul-shooting contest. Jericho was at the line with the score tied and 10 seconds left in regulation but missed both attempts. Tracey King probably ended up with about 25 points. Both teams were pretty sloppy. MV plays TC on Tuesday.
Looks like West Springfield gave Good Counsel a good run before falling 56-50.

Interesting happenings in NOVA last night:
--Mount Vernon drops TC 76-63, and judging from the box score, it wasn't that close. Venable and King combined for 41 but the key for MV may have been the return of Allison Mathes, who didn't play against Jericho but hit five threes last night. TRP with 23, I think they are going to need her to put up 30+ this year.
--Speaking of 30+, Myisha Goodwin goes for 39 as Edison beats Herndon 64-46...that's 70 points through two games for her. This year's area scoring leader?
--Robinson beats Mial-free Lee 43-33. I guess they specialize in beating Patriot District powers missing their top players.
Down in Richmond, Cosby beats Monacan 64-53 in another battle of ranked teams.
In a small-school showdown, last year's AA semifinalist Greensville County beats last year's D1 runner-up Franklin 46-33.

TC over Edison 62-49. TC jumped out 18-4 after the first quarter and 31-17 at halftime. Ruffin-Pratt was on fire in the first half, 19 points, almost all on jump shots, and I think she only missed one. Goodwin hit some three to get Edison within 32-24, but TC scored 10 straight and cruised to the win. The box score will say 34 points for TRP and 33 for Goodwin, but a big key for TC was Khalia Boston's early defense on Goodwin--she couldn't get anything going until Boston picked up some fouls and they had to rotate defenders.

Northern Region district play kicks off tomorrow night and there are some key games right off the bat...Edison @ Mount Vernon, Lee @ South County, Oakton @ Westfield. How many district games in a row has Edison won?
Time to throw out some predictions:
Patriot
1. TC Williams
2. West Springfield
3. South County
4. Lee
National
1. Mount Vernon
2. Edison
3. Yorktown
4. Washington-Lee
Concorde
1. Oakton
2. Westfield
3. Chantilly
4. Herndon
Liberty
1. WT Woodson
2. Langley
3. Marshall
4. Madison
Concorde (after Oakton) and Liberty are very wide open, it'll be interesting to see what happens.
Mary Washington is 8-0 after knocking off the #1 team in Division III, Kean, over the weekend...Jenna McRae from Annandale is the leading scorer for the Eagles so far, and Katie Wimmer (Madison), Ashley Warhurst (Centreville), and Rachel Martin (Ireton) are also seeing a lot of playing time as frosh...

I love coach Kelly's quote about her team's basketball IQ
Nice article about their unusual training methods this year:
http://connectionnewspapers.com/article.asp?article=323516&paper=81&cat=105
The two teams began to not only share the same weight room but the girls started to adopt some of Jimmo’s wrestling workouts. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Jimmo would put the girls through a program that had them lifting and flipping truck tires, swinging sledge hammers and carrying bags of sand.
In addition to open gym every Tuesday and Thursday, the girls would run up and down Silverbrook Hill with the boys, a hilly stretch of road that runs right past South County and the site of the former Lorton prison.
“Energy, drive and mental toughness were all things that I felt were necessary for them to develop in the off-season,” Kelly said. “The whole purpose of my kids working out with the wrestlers is because wrestlers have a very different mentality, and they have a very different work ethic.”
From what I have seen of Whitney Young in the past their coach is almost as stylish as the WCDS coach.

I wouldn't call the PA loss to E. Meck an upset...E. Meck has a couple of nice pieces and 6'3" soph Chaylia Coleman gave E-dub all she could handle on the defensive end. E. Meck also beat former #1St. Mike's in 3rd-4th place game. However, the game against Norcross was more surprising because Norcross has a pretty tight backcourt, Jr Briana Jordan was probably the best shooter in the tournament. PA's guard played under control and Williams was way too much for the Norcross post who is signed with Vanderbilt. Just my 2cents from the cheap seats:D

TC Williams 46 West Springfield 43
WS led 25-13 in the second quarter, as 11 points from Robinson (including some foot-on-the-line twos) helped overcome the loss of Landers to a hand/finger injury for most of the first half. TC cut it to 25-18 at the half and came out pressuring in the second half to quickly get within 25-24, but just...couldn't...get over the hump until they took a 42-41 lead with a couple minutes left. A pair of free throws by Robinson put WS back on top 43-42, but a basket by Huggins (I think) gave TC a 44-43 lead. WS threw the ball away on their inbounds pass, TC missed a shot with about 35 seconds left but Fikes the offensive rebound, was fouled and hit a free throw to put TC up by 2. WS got a good look on their next possession but TRP (playing with four fouls) came flying in and made the WS player change her shot, it was no good and TC was able to run it down to 5.7 seconds before the foul. Fikes again hit one of two, and WS had a chance to tie but was unable to get a shot off.
Difference in the game was TC's offensive rebounding, they must have had 25. No one was shooting that well but they got second and third chances all night. TRP scored 24, sort of an off night most of the way but made some big plays late and played the last five minutes with four fouls. WS played well most of the way but tightened up and made a lot of errors in the final minutes. Robinson finished with 18, maybe should have shot instead of passed on a few occasions but probably her best HS game to date.

Was everybody at the RB VS FP game except me?!?
I know the score, but was interested in knowing how FP looked the second time around. Anyone with any details would be much appreciated.
Is the thrill gone that quick...
In case I wasn't the only one to miss it..RB 54 FP 41
RB got out to a fast start and FP closed the gap in the first on two Danni Jackson 3 pointers to be down 5 after 1.
FP made a run in the 2nd cutting the lead to 2 before going down 5 at the half.
In the third FP got down by 13 and came back to cut it to 4. Wound up down 6 after 3.
Shayla Drakeford gave Saunders problems all night and got her to 4 fouls early in the 3rd on offensive pushoffs. FP did not press or capatilize on this foul trouble and Johnson ran the point in the meantime.
RB got very tired in the fourth and it was looking like FP was going to start to take command getting 3 on 1 and 2 on 1 looks at the basket.
3 things happened.
1. FP missed those 3 on 1 2 on 1 opportunities as Tianna Hawkins altered shots or stole over the top passes, at least 4 straight missed 3 on 2 or better chances.
2. Gerda Gatling was called for a blocking foul when she got runover..said something to the ref and got T'ed up. 4 point play
3. less than 30 seconds later Tierra Hawkins got fouled driving to the hoop. Made the first missed the 2nd and Tianna Hawkins got the offensive board and fouled on the putback. Tianna made the first missed the 2nd and RB once again got the offensive board and subsequently scored.
2 4-0 runs inside of 1 min and missed breaks by FP sealed the deal and FP didn't have enough left to get back into the game.
While FP looked much better the 2nd time around I would say RB would win 8 in 10 matchups due to overwhelming size advantage. Rebounding in game 1 was like 60 to 29 and in game two the rebounding was much closer having a huge factor as so many of RB points in both games came off of 2nd chance opportunities.
Notes on MD officiating compared to NOVA officiating. You truely have to get mugged to get a foul called in PG county from what i've seen over the IAABO and this match. They really reward the post players in PG County and don't do much to protect guard play. I am not saying it's a bad thing as 'letting them play' is a nice relief from NOVA officials who routinely have teams in the bonus before the first quarter is out. I'm not saying it's better or worse, just extremely different. NOVA calls more handchecks, pushing in the back on the blocks, reaching over the back to deny entry passes etc than PG does. NOVA pretty much makes all the 'ticky tack' calls and PG pretty much ignores them all. They call almost any contact when driving to the hoop in NOVA and they do not in PG.
It would be interesting to see RB have to adjust to that sort of officiating as they do not go very deep. A return match to VA wouldn't be that interesting next year as FP loses 4 starting seniors.

NOVA girls basketball = Barbie ball, therefore Barbie officiating.
And before you fake reverse racists get all hot and bothered with the IH, please note that there was, is, and always will be a Black Barbie--so, Barbie ball doesn't automatically mean WHITE-GIRL BASKETBALL...
And very few high-school-girls-basketball referees ANYWHERE in America know how to referee ATHLETICISM, by the way--and playing hard does not equal being athletic...

I am so glad you said this! Everywhere I've been to watch or coach girls basketball you can see the bewilderment on the referees' faces. They really aren't sure how to call girls games, especially games in which the girls are extremely athletic. It's almost to the point where the officials don't think that girls can be that athletic.
I truly believe that there are fouls called simply because the officials can't believe that a female athlete can do some of the things she does. It takes away from the women's high school game sometimes. But again, as a coach, you have to have your kids ready to play any style and adjust to how the officials are calling the games.

The NOVA officiating is the same for the boys, at least in the Northern Region, called a lot tighter than in the rest of the state. Saw one holiday tournament game this year where the visiting team had 16 fouls in the first half and the hosts had 3.

The NOVA refs or the level of players?
& why you trying to crank up that old my side of the bridge stereotype mess?!
I agree w/ others that refs in general are bad about keeping up with what the girls can do. I have even seen some games where the refs look like they are taking pity on the "softer" team and begin calling ticky-tack fouls just to slow the pace. YAWN. And can't tell you how many times I've seen the ref blow the whistle in anticipation of contact instead of waiting for actual contact?
Varsity players should be allowed to get after each other. Hunger makes for more exciting competition. There are several teams in NOVA that would get after each other if they weren't in danger of fouling out over some nonsense. Good teams adapt to the refs style.
That's not on the players it's the VHSL.

Based on results, that's a good enough list for AAA, and I don't know too much about A. But looking at AA, if James Monroe isn't one of the top 17 teams in the State, I must be missing out on what's up. I'd have them right after TA and Spotswood.

Forest Park looked flat and after Williams blocked a couple of shots in the paint no one else went to the basket but Danni. FP relied solely on jump shots and there wasn't an answer for Williams on defense, which then opened lanes up for drives to the basket, open jumpers, and rebounds for PA other players. PA was very focused in this game.

Briana Scott did not play in the game for Forest Park against Princess Anne.
Good news, bad news report:
- Good news to know FP was beaten that bad without their inside presence--a 2nd meeting later this season may result in a slightly different result (a loss, any loss, much less a 30-pt loss makes for a great motivator).
- Bad news report for Briana is that she is injured, hopefully, not an ACL or similiarly related injury that will keep her off the court long.

Nansemond River wins easily against Great Bridge 70-22 keeping pace with the Lady Braves. So the re-match is on for tomorrow night at Nansemond River.
Hampton's loss makes Friday game with Heritage that much more important as both teams come in with 1 loss in district play.

Mt Vernon over Edison...weird game to me at least.
There is a certain nepotistic aura that engulfs the Mt. Vernon gym...no sure what was worse the officiating or the traffic on Rt. 1.

Dunno about the officiating but the MV gym is the deadest gym in the NR...don't think I've ever seen that place more than a third full.
TC beat WS 59-53 in the Patriot final. Looked like it might be a mirror image of the regular season games as TC led most of the way only for WS to poke ahead 50-48, but TC retook the lead on a three by Fikes(!) and outshot WS from the line the rest of the way (WS 3-10 down the stretch). Khalia Boston stole the show with five first-half threes and 21 total points. Logan Battle had 18 for WS after struggling mightily in both regular-season meeting, her and Robinson are going to be trouble over the next three years.
Game got a little nasty at the end, TRP got a T for throwing a little elbow after being fouled, WS fans responded by booing her during the announcement of the all-tournament team. I'd love to see these teams meet again in the regional final but Oakton (who barely got by Westfield tonight) and MV will have something to say about it.
I think the regional bracket looks like this:
TC Williams vs. WT Woodson
Edison vs. Robinson
Madison vs. Annandale
Westfield vs. Yorktown
Mount Vernon vs. Chantilly
West Springfield vs. Langley
Oakton vs. Stuart
South Lakes vs. South County

MV over WS 51-45, MV was up 39-28 early in the fourth and looked to be heading to a dull victory, WS caused some turnovers and rallied to 41-39 and had a layup to tie, but missed and MV got consective second-chance baskets by King and McDonald to open up a margin again. MV did a great job of handling foul trouble as King picked up two quick fouls in each half but they extended their lead when she was on the bench. I don't think WS hit a single three, and they attempted a bunch.

Prince William County representing in the Regionals! I thought that the Stafford PG would give Stonewall J more problems, apparently she started out hot.
So after watching Stafford junior Marquel Davis breeze through the lane for her third uncontested basket in the first five minutes of Thursday’s Northwest Region Tournament semifinal game, coach White expressed his displeasure in no uncertain terms.
“She’s getting nothing but layups,” he shouted. “Stop that. Are you serious?”
Davis reached a heralded high school milestone with 3:32 remaining in the opening period, scoring her 1,000th career point. But the University of Pittsburgh recruit didn’t find anymore room to maneuver after that.
She is going to be quite the player for Stafford next year. Seems like Nsanji White really did a good job adjusting to her play.
BIG KUDOS to the Bruins of FP. ANYONE that knows anything about basketball in the northwest regions knows that you don't travel to a place like Franklin Cty and beat a 26-1 team easily. The Bruins seem like they have rediscovered their break neck defense and Coach Tillett has them ready to make another run at the State Title.

Oakton vs. Mount Vernon--MV led 21-2 in the second quarter as Oakton went scoreless for about 10 minutes. Oakton cut it to 26-14 and 37-33 with about 5 minutes left when Tracey King, who had about 20 points, went down with a leg injury--she was carried off the court and was walking around on crutches later. Hopefully it is not too serious. With King out, Oakton quickly took the lead, MV missed some shots from in close, and Oakton pulled away with free throws. Terrible way for the season to end for MV but they should be back next year. The first half should put to rest any thoughts Oakton fans had of being some sort of undefeated supermachineteam, but they showed that they could bounce back. Caroline Coyer had a great game, for the most part their freshmen played like seniors and their seniors played like freshmen.
TC vs. Westfield--TRP came to play tonight, probably about 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 216 blocks. TC took control in the second quarter and led the rest of the way, it looked like they were going to have foul trouble but they put away the whistles in the second half.

The IH was in the building last night for the action at Robinson.
- The first game evolved as the IH thought it would. Mount Vernon went up 21-2, with the straight smash-down set up. But then, the Mount Vernon coaching staff STARTED COACHING, and Oakton was able to show signs of life. The second half was played exactly like the first half; but the zebras went off on Mount Vernon in the second half--somewhere around 17 fouls to 4--and Oakton coach Priester can coach. Then Tracy King went down with the injury.
Game, set, and match.
It is the IH's understanding that the Oakton faithful really feel that they are truly all-that. The IH would say that Priester is a much better coach than the people on the roster are players. As a matter of fact, the school, club, AND college coaching experience of Priester and those FIVE ASSISTANTS obviously works wonders with that crew...
As for Mount Vernon: y'all blew it, people; y'all should've beat them tabby cats by AT LEAST 25! You had 'em on life support, and was scared to pull the plug! And even if you get 'em all next year, you're still gonna be bent outta shape about this one more.
And by the way, sports fans, no shot clock means no real basketball!
- The other game was rather basic to the IH: Westfield, with no shot clock, puts up 20-25 passes per offensive possession--giving a tired-and-broke-down-at-this-point-in-the-season Tierra Ruffin-Pratt plenty of chill-out opportunities--before they drive to the basket, allowing TRP the opportunity to block or alter a shot. TC Williams goes up a solid 9-11 points, until THEY go into a stall game (!). Westfield gets back in the game for real; then TRP plays hard down the stretch--and the Westfield parents are playing golf next week...
An interesting evening, the IH blending with his peoples, in Northern Virginia.

The word is Tracy has a knee injury. Best wishes to her for some good news from the Dr.
Now, the MV coach's injury was to the brain.
Coach- How do you lose a game like that?!
quim- I'm with you on the O. 21-2. shhh. Ya'll made MV look like a superteam- until...
IH- what's up with the TC stall game? YAWN! I paid good money to see a good basketball game. Westfield was never a bigger threat than the refs but DANG - play basketball. This is why the shot clock was invented! YAWN.
Sadly, I expect the Oakton TC game to look much like that 2nd game. YAWN. I may play golf next weekend with the Westfield parents instead.

Northern Region finals have been moved to Tuesday, Central and Eastern Regions to Wednesday.
Forest Park beat Stonewall Jackson 75-56 in the NW region final. Jackson had 39.
Saturday is shaping up to be a huge day at Robinson, with FIVE games on the slate:
1:00 Loudoun County vs. Courtland (D4 quarterfinal)
2:45 Freedom-South Riding vs. James Monroe (D3 quarterfinal)
4:30 George Mason vs. Northumberland (D2 quarterfinal)
6:15 AAA girls quarterfinal
8:00 AAA boys quarterfinal
The state tournament fields in Divisions 1-4 are set:
Division 4
Loudoun County vs. Courtland (@Robinson, 3/7, 1:00)
Grafton vs. Charlottesville (@Christopher Newport, 3/6, 7:00)
Hidden Valley vs. Staunton River (@Salem Civic Center, 3/7, 7:00)
Turner Ashby vs. Blacksburg (@JMU, 3/7, 3:45)
Turner Ashby is the comfortable favorite here, but the big question is two-time defending state champs Hidden Valley, who have 11 losses on the season but won the regional championship with Abby Redick back in the lineup.
Division 3
Freedom-South Riding vs. James Monroe (@Robinson, 3/7, 2:45)
Greensville County vs. Millbrook (@Siegel Center, 3/7, 1:30)
Patrick County vs. Lord Botetourt (@Salem Civic Center, 3/7, 5:15)
Lee-Staunton vs. Graham (@JMU, 3/6, 7:00)
Pretty wide open here. Can Meixandra Porter, Kelsey Buchanan, and Freedom bring home Loudoun County's first state championship?
Division 2
George Mason vs. Northumberland (@Robinson, 3/7, 4:30)
Lancaster vs. Randolph-Henry (@King William, 3/7, tentative)
Honaker vs. Floyd County (@Virginia High, 3/7, 3:30)
Radford vs. Lee High (@Salem Civic Center, 3/6, 7:00)
The game to watch is a potential fifth meeting between defending state champs Floyd and Radford. Floyd won both regular season meeting, but Radford won the district final by 4 and the regional final by 2.
Division 1
Buffalo Gap vs. West Point (@JMU, 3/7, 2:00)
Franklin vs. Altavista (TBA)
Council vs. Narrows (@Virginia High, 3/7, 12:00)
Bland County vs. JI Burton (@Salem Civic Center, 3/7, 12:00)
Potential rematch of last year's championship game between Buffalo Gap and Franklin in the semis. Bottom half of the bracket looks weak in my uneducated opinion.

I admire her guts to grind through the high school season for her team. Chronic separations for an athlete of her caliber almost always require surgery. She has bigger fish to fry and may be delaying the inevitable. Four to six month of good hard rehab if she times it right she won't miss a beat, if not maybe looking at redshirt. Hate to lose another one for the McD's game so I hope she's just some ice and Advil away from being 100%.

Pg you are right chronic shoulder subluxations can require surgery. Dont know exactly what happened but if her ligature is really loose it may only respond to surgery.
The fact that she is wearing a brace suggest at least that she was still susceptable to dislocations. Anyway heres wishing only the best for Ms Ruffin-Pratt

went and saw the Oakton victory over TC Williams on Tuesday. All i can say is that whoever mentioned teh 'witch doctor' thing earlier is spot on. Once TRP went down with her shoulder all the momentum swung to Oakton.
Freshman pg number 5 was STRUGGLING vs TRP early and looked completely out classed. Once TRP went out she found her nerve and took over the game penetrating left and right at will.
Oakton is undefeated but are they as good as their record? Doesn't sound like Atlee is going to do much to showing if that is true or not.

with much respect to all and lots of tongue in cheek:
The M-O-M was in the HOUSE at the RSS to watch the East of 95 vs West of 95 battle for the NRC of the DMV, but found Oakton's pre-game ritual kinda strange. They didn't shoot or run. First the coach put a horseshoe in the middle of the court. Then they got in a big circle around the horseshoe with somebody I think was their team doctor in the middle, but it was kinda hard to tell with the mask and the big bubbling pot. They then whipped out a bunch of BARBIES dressed in uniforms of the opposing team and mumbled strange words while their mascot, the TABBY CAT, danced around. I think there were a couple of ZEBRAS in the circle, too. Poor old TC never had a chance against that powerful magic.:p
OK, now that I've had my fun...
The injury to TRP obviously had an impact, but how much? Oakton was down by single digits when she went out. Would she have continued to score at will? Would she have tired out? Would she have gotten into foul trouble? Would all of Oakton's first string gotten into foul trouble trying to guard her? Would Priester have adjusted his defense? Would the outcome have been different if she had stayed in? No one really knows for sure except the people on message boards-- it's pure speculation. As to #5 struggling, I'm not sure I completely agree, but regardless one would hope that an All-Met, national top 10 player would have something on a freshman.
Finally, I don't think it's fair to suggest that TC can only win with Tierra. As good as she is, injuries are part of the game and you build a TEAM so that you can survive and advance with injuries. I was most impressed with the way the rest of the team, especially Boston, stepped up after TRP went out. I'm sure they will do well in the state tourney.
A team's win/loss record says that they were good enough to beat the teams that they played and defeated. Time will tell where the Oakton team fits in the long run. However, it's unfair to criticize a bunch of kids for going out, playing hard and winning.

Oakton 74 Atlee 45--Atlee needed more than a witch doctor here. They jumped out to a 15-8 lead behind some hot shooting from Sydney Henderson. Oakton scored the next 12, led by about 10 through the middle of the third quarter, and then ran away with it as Atlee went totally cold. Oakton totally dominated the boards and Stephenson and C. Coyer were draining the threes--they looked better than in regionals, although Atlee didn't offer a ton of resistance once things went against them. Richelle Price never seemed all that involved. Oakton is the only NR teams of either sex going to the Siegel Center...hopefully they can knock off the Eastern Region powers.
Freedom 64 James Monroe 57--The most competitive girls' game of the day. Freedom led by 10 at halftime, but James Monroe cut it to 3 late in the third. Freedom's coach put Porter and Scott back in the game with four fouls each and it paid off as they scored 12 of Freedom's last 19. Buchanan and Scott both had huge games, Buchanan blocked Harrison-Lewis's shot three times in the first quarter and it really set the tone. Monroe is really quick but just couldn't hit shots.
Loudoun County 90 Courtland 51--LC led 23-7 after one quarter and 53-22 at halftime as Courtland just didn't show up at all. LC is very entertaining, pressing and pushing the ball on every possession.
George Mason 57 Northumberland 26--Mason's all-around size is too much for most Group A teams. It'll be interesting to see what they can do with Lancaster's Andrea White in the semis.
No power outage this year.

Lake Taylor 57, Forest Park 49
Sad day for the bruins as they lost a tough one to Lake Taylor. FP lost momentum at the end of the first half on a 42 foot buzzer beater that cut the FP lead to 1 at the half and never seemed to get it back.
The bruins led by 8 early but the Titans of Lake Taylor kept cleaning up the offensive boards and scoring on 2nd chance points.
FP Superstar Danni Jackson finished with 18 pts but was out almost the entire 3rd quarter and the start of the 4th with 4 fouls.
I really like how the Norfolk girls go to the glass and its going to be interesting to see if Oakton's disciplined offense will outlast the multiple looks lake taylor throws out on defense as they rarely were in the same defense for more than 2 possessions in a row.
I heard the Stonewall Jackson lost to Princess Anne by 9.

I had the distinct opportunity to watch 3 of the 4 quarterfinal games: Cosby over TCW, Lake Taylor over Forest Park, & Oakton over Atlee.
Cosby/TC Williams: TCW was very much out of synch for obvious reasons. TCW girls fought hard without their floor leader & McDonalds All-American nominee (TRP). Cosby would have probably won the game, but not as easily if Ms Pratt was on the court. My hat's off to the Cosby Coach for ensuring her big girl got her reps, even though she was sick & not playing up to par. Bertrand set the pace for the Cosby girls inside early & often and Becky made her mark on the game at the end of the half thru the remainder of the game.
Forest Park/Lake Taylor: Great game thru out the contest--I was very disappointed in the TERRIBLE officating crew. They started out calling every touch they "thought" they might have seen as a foul, thus taking FP (DJ) out of the game, 2 in the 1st quarter. Gusty move on the FP coach to put DJ back into the game before half-time, picking up the 3rd foul before the half. In the 2nd half, the poor refs could not make up their mind if there was a foul on several occassions with "bodies" all over the floor on either a "CHARGE" or a "BLOCK," but no call...I was afraid some of the girls might injure themselves or their opponent...
Atlee/Oakton: Oakton girls are very well coached & they have shown great discipline in their last 2-games (Mt Vernon & Atlee). Based upon what I saw in Oakton's last two games, I was wondering if the two losing coaches performed any scouting on them prior to playing them. Atlee NEVER came out of their lazy zone defense, leaving every Oakton player to launch uncontested 3-pointers from every spot on the court. I was amazed at what I saw or did not see...! (In the NR game, Mt Vernon had a 21 - 2) lead on Oakton and the Coach took his foot off the pedal and let them back in the game. Tracey should have been on the bench at the time she was trying to make a play to keep her team in the lead, but instead, she went down with a terrible looking knee injury...!
Overall, 3-great quarterfinal games. The semis should be just as exciting.
My PREDICTION: Princess Anne - Lake Taylor rematch for the State Title...! Cosby & Oakton, don't hate me too long--I am just a junkie fan with a secret weapon, wanting to see great basketball played...!

Freedom rallied past Millbrook in the fourth quarter as Buchanan and Scott each posted double-doubles again. Millbrook's Courtni Green (the best player in the state and best freshman in the country according to the Jackie Brewer fan club on virginiapreps--or maybe not, based on which now-deleted posts you believe) struggled and shot 2-12 from the field.
Lee won behind 18 points and 8 assists from Angela Mickens and 20 rebounds from Daquaa Scott. UNC-Asheville signee Grace Blaylock had 30 in a losing cause for Botetourt.

Must give credit where credit is due, Oakton came to play, they were prepared and executed their game plan. Must give props to freshman PG Caroline Coyer, the kid played a great game with 11 asst and only 4 TOs. Zora was en fuego in the 1st half and that set the tone. Even though Oakton didn't hit a 3 in the second half, they were able to attack the basket because LT had to focus on Zora sitting in that corner.
Priester gets a lot of credit as a coach and rightly so, in the post game press conference he talked about how they scouted and prepared for LT and it was right on point. But the players of Oakton are the ones that have to go out on the floor and execute and execute they did.
But what was the LT coaching staff thinking about with their game prep, because it was like they went into this very important semi-final game completely unprepared for Oakton:confused:
LT has young talent and Linday Stephany has star potential but Coach Sawyer did her team a great disservice by not having them prepared for Oakton. They had no zone offense, they zone pressed instead of man pressing, they didn't really pressure the freshman PG(who admitted she had 'bubblegutz' in the press conference) and their M2M defense was totally ineffective because they never bump cutters or rotate on help side.
Toia Giggets for LT did a great job on the boards and she had plenty of opportunities for off rebounds because LT didn't shoot the ball that well.
Hopefully, the LT coaches will work with their team and focus on fundamentals to go along with their natural ability.

Williams is a BEAST, plain and simple, she had one possession where she blocked 3 shots in a row. Powell has settled in nicely and is learning how to play with a dominant post player. The match up with Oakton is going to be very interesting because obviously Big E is going to rule the paint. The key is the other PA guards have to play smart and understand that they need to get her ball early and often so she can do her thing. Oakton is going to have to double down at some point and that will leave space on the perimeter for them to knock down shots(if they can).
I only wish that there was a shot clock in VA!!!!!

It's so depressing for the IH to watch Fred Priester and his STAFF OF FIVE not even coaching hard against these people with superior talent at every turn.
Is it merely irony that Fred and his STAFF OF FIVE are just sitting there, minding their business--with a timely time-out, or a strategic substitution--LETTING THEIR GIRLS RUN AROUND AND PLAY BASKETBALL?
My WORD, the Oakton girls are playing better off-the-dribble/street ball THAN THE PLAYERS WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO BE BORN TO DO IT!!!!!
The IH was in the building yesterday, sports fans, and Priester & Associates, Inc. had Lake Taylor looking like a rec-league team; it was EMBARASSING...

But HE almost blew yesterday's game against Cosby with that Williams-Pitts foul-trouble match-up circus show--fortunately for him, Pitts was dumber than Williams, in trying to block shots that weren't going in, ANYWAY.

Oakton came out putting tremendous defensive focus on Williams, and Powell burned them in the first half. The banked-in three at the halftime buzzer looked like it might be a killer. Second half, Oakton defended the perimeter more, PA didn't adjust and look inside, Powell cooled off and Oakton came back. But Powell and Williams made the big shots down the stretch.
Oakton destroyed the old tournament record for three-pointers. Their student section represented well too, amazing how the bandwagon grows from the regional semis to the state championship.
Dozier must be happy he didn't follow through with his plans to walk out after the loss to FP last year.
Didn't get there in time to see the George Mason game, but they beat Lancaster 54-52, so NOVA still has a chance to bring home three titles tomorrow. Mason plays Floyd County who easily beat Lee today and look tough as always. Freedom is favored over Lee-Staunton but with the DMV board coaches sweeping all the titles this year it is a tough call. Loudoun County has to be the underdog against Turner Ashby as they lost to TA by double digits earlier in the year but if they shoot like they have in the past two games they have a chance.
Buffalo Gap beat Bland County 50-40 for their second straight D1 title in a game that was never really close.

Three titles brought back to Northern Virginia today:
D3 final
Freedom 58 Lee-Staunton 33--Freedom up 20-4 after a quarter and it was over. Dionna Scott was unstoppable in the first half and finished with 24, Porter added 18, Buchanan didn't score much but had 21 rebounds and blocked a bunch of shots. Might have been interesting to see this Freedom team play the Hidden Valley teams from the last couple years. Lee started a bunch of freshmen and they turned the ball over a bunch early. Both teams could be back next year.
D2 final
George Mason 53 Floyd County 46--Mason up 49-35 with 4 minutes left, decides they've done enough for the day and try to hold the hold the ball, six turnovers later it's 49-44 with 30 seconds left and Kim Kenny heading to the line for a pressure-packed one-and-one. Fortunately for the Mustangs she hit both free throws and they held on for the win. Mason probably should have won by more but they missed a bunch of layups. With four starters returning they should be the favorites for next year. Avancini was contained to 19 points for Floyd, Chantal Thomas and Bria Platenburg did a nice job of making her work and as Floyd likes to take quick shots when she gave the ball up she often didn't get it back.
D4 final
Loudoun County 63 Turner Ashby 47--The most surprising result of the finals as LC jumped to a 15-2 lead and led 36-18 at halftime. In their three state tournament games they were up by an average of 26 points at halftime, that has to be a record. Alissa Kain led the way with 23 points. LC, like Freedom and Mason, has four starters back but they will have to find a replacement for senior PG Kerry Sarver who does a great job getting the ball to their scorers in the right places in their uptempo offense. For TA, Newman just had an awful night, couldn't hit anything. Burkholder did okay but they never looked like getting back into the game after the poor start.

Buchanan broke the state tournament record for blocks
