Arbitrarily associating the following groupings and recruiting points to the recruits' grades as determined by ESPN/Hoopgurlz:

Group 4 recruits:
Grade of 98 = 13 pts (applies to prospect ranked # 1)
Grade of 97 = 12 pts (applies to prospect ranked # 2)
Grade of 96 = 11 pts (applies to prospects ranked # 3 to # 7)

Group 3 recruits:
Grade of 95 = 10 pts (applies to prospects ranked # 8 to #16)
Grade of 94 = 09 pts (applies to prospects ranked #17 to #20)

Group 2 recruits:
Grade of 93 = 08 pts (applies to prospects ranked #21 to #25)
Grade of 92 = 07 pts (applies to prospects ranked #26 to #36)
Grade of 91 = 06 pts (applies to prospects ranked #37 to #50)

Group 1 recruits:
Grade of 90 = 05 pts (applies to prospects ranked #51 to #53)
Grade of 89 = 04 pts (applies to prospects ranked #54 to #63)
Grade of 88 = 03 pts (applies to prospects ranked #64 to #81)
Grade of 87 = 02 pts (applies to prospects ranked #82 to #95)
Grade of 86 = 01 pts (applies to prospects ranked #96 to #100)

and then applying arbitrary but sensible impact factors to come up with the prospects' final scores:

Group 4 recruits:
4 x points associated with recruit's grade

Group 3 recruits:
3 x points associated with recruit's grade

Group 2 recruits:
2 x points associated with recruit's grade

Group 1 recruits:
1 x points associated with recruit's grade

You can thank Cal's monster class for this year's conference lot. There were other great classes in the conference but Cal grabbing that many top kids is major in a strictly point total system.

Cal's monster class is definitely key, but, even without it, the Pac 10 will still end up being #2, just behind the Big 12.

And that's because #4 USC, #6 Stanford, and #9 UCLA are also in the Top 10 of a purely statistically driven class ranking:

#1 Cal - 100 pts
#4 USC - 62 pts
#6 Stanford - 60 pts
#9 UCLA - 44 pts
#? WSU - 2 pts

As can be inferred from the above list, the combined total recruiting score (166 pts) of USC, Stanford, and UCLA, is actually better than the total recruiting score of each of the other conferences with the exception of the Big 12:

Big 12 - 189 pts
USC + Stanford + UCLA - 168 pts
Big 10 - 165 pts
SEC - 154 pts
ACC - 135 pts
Big East - 83 pts

If these ratings translate into on-court success, this is tremendous news for the sport, and business, of women's basketball. If and when the game becomes national rather than regional, and if and when Southern California gets just as excited about women's basketball as the Big 12, then women's basketball will have taken a huge step forward.

Stanford (#2 recruiting class in 2006, #4 recruiting class in 2007, and #6 recruiting class in 2008) and USC (#1 recruiting class in 2006, #12 recruiting class in 2007, and #7 recruiting class in 2008) have been recruiting very well over the past 3 years, and now Cal joins in with its monster 2009 recruiting class.

This has definitely translated into some great successes for Stanford, as evidenced by their march to the NCAA championship game last year.

On the other hand, USC has really been beset by the injury bug, and we're talking about a very radical case of misfortunes here as 2006 top recruit Jackie GEMELOS and 2007 top recruit Stephanie GILBREATH have yet to step on the court for them.

Not sure how all of this will equate to on the floor performance but it sure is a heck of a lot of fun reading this stuff - but just like the psychics, when something translates into action we can all say he was right.

That aside - Cal with depth alone from their recruiting class will be a major impact, having a lot of similar players interchangeable can create havoc on the court - unlike the teams where 1 unjury could make a break a season for them. Should be interesting over the next 2 years to see how this all pans out.
