View Full Version : What is the CIF SS thinking?

If the teams I just read about are the new divisions for CIF then all I can say is the Southern Section needs new leadership. They put Summit in a lower division after they made the finals in the higher division, Brea moves down 3 divisions ( thats crazy) Mater Dei moves down 2 divisions while Troy stays in 1AA, Mira Costa gets to state and they don't move.
Clay can you make any sense of this?

I read the same stuff on another forum too.
Apparently someone is claiming the new divisions were obtained at a coaches clinic that the CIF was involved in. Not sure about that. CIF announced that playoff divisions were to be released in November. Perhaps someone saw a preliminary breakdown and copied it.
The one that puzzled me was Dana Hills, a South Coast League team which made its first appearance, in the past 4 years, in the CIF SS playoffs last season. They won a first round game and lost the next round. They are in the same division(1AA), based on the posters list, as San Clemente which has had playoff success over the past 4 years, including a CIF SS championship 2 years ago. The divsions were supposed to be based on a combo formula of enrollment and playoff success over the past few years. So I dont know how Dana Hills can be hurt by put so high.

I agree dude - Troys enrollment is only at about 2500 compared to say San Clemente at about 3600 - their success rate dropped of over the last couple of years and yet Breas was pretty good and went to State the year before last. Sumitt win and go down. Not making sense at all!!!

Is this list available to the public yet? Is it on the web?
Any info on whether it's for both boys and girls, or for other sports? And does geography have anything to do with it? Rising travel costs may impact these decisions as well.

So if I understand correctly, that the A and AA designations don't mean much in terms of qualifying for postseason, then Brea, Mater Dei, Summit, Buena and Mira Costs are Division II this year, and Foothill and Marlborough are Division III. All the other teams that might be ranked statewide are DI, at least as far as I can tell.
So how did they determine who went where?

Doesn't make sense - I've looked on their web for the enrollment and I can't find it any where or the formula they used.
Last year in D2AA AB Miller was ranked 1 and Edison 2 and I think Summit 3 but Edison lost Samulson for the play offs and went out in the 2nd round. Of course they moved Miller up to 1AA and they are weaker than last year as they lost Wells so it all seems crazy to me.
I don't understand why Brea would drop that much, considering their record and enrollment is in the 2000s. Some of the others don't add up either.
Anyone help with the formula and enrollment divisions?

I don't know the exact formula but it went off enrollment and then past two years success. Brea supossdly has dropped to 1900 enrollment which would be a division 3 size school.
Clay the way I under stand it is 1A and 1AA will send 8 of the top 8 teams to Div 1 state playoffs. IIA and IIAA will send top 4 teams to State DII and so on. Div IIIA and IIIAA top 4 to div III.

Do you know what the enrollment criteria is for SS - Central Section as I've been checking the webs for enrollment and it still does not make sense as Brea is in the 2000s not 1900s and Summit has about 2200 students.

The enrollment criteria make little sense if they are not evenly applied -- and they are not.
It would seem that a D5 team in San Diego would be a D5 team in Yreka, but that is not the case. Each section, really, is autonomous, and does pretty much what it pleases, which can make state playoffs not as fair as they should be.

Actually I saw Summits #s at 2554, if they went on last years that would be an anomally as the school only had 2 years of students, with Troy standing at 2582, why such the discrepancy?
I read in the LA Times that on the boys side Mater Dei was still 1AA, which makes sense putting the big recruiting schools in the super division but why drop the girls to 2A.

Yeah the central section did the same thing. They said they were going to use a point system and what not but they still had teams move and drop that made no sense at and in no way could have been produced by a point system.
Looking at those divisions it looks like
Brea
Mater Dei
Summit
Hanford (moved up to DII in the central section)
are the top DII schools coming out of southern california.

Merely further proof that CIF needs to establish statewide criteria for such things as:
1) Division assignments
2) Number of games/scrimmages
3) Practice start times
4) Summer contacts

The top D2 schools from socal would be Summit, Mater Dei, Brea and Edison - I don't think Hanford is in socal. I'd expect Summit to meet MD in the 2A final and Brea to meet Edison in the 2AA final and would probably go for Summit to go farther than both the other teams. They are coming off a good summer and I just read that Brea may have another player injured.

I meant to say top in socal state playoffs. As in all of southern california.
