Tennessee decides not to renew contract to play UConn this year reports ESPN.com

Neither coach could immediately be reached for comment. But UConn men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun, serving as a guest sportscaster Friday on WVIT-TV in Connecticut, called it a poor decision.

"Tennessee and UConn clearly, clearly are the best two coaches in women's college basketball and that is the best game every single year," he said. "To give it up over some, I'm sure, small detail, is ridiculous. In my opinion, the game should be played every year."

This is a very bad day for women's basketball. I don't know the reason why Tennessee made a decision like this that will definitely hurt the women's game. It just does not make any sense to me.

LATER in the summer, one thing though is ESPN was adament to play this game in late Feb and Pat did not want to at that point of the season. At some point TV or programing has to quit determining a school's schedule. There are other issues as we will find out but let's not produce the typical blame that is being written about on a couple boards. WCBB is MUCH bigger than UT and UC and the respect Pat has in the sport should afford her the latitude to come forward after the schedule is released and give her reasoning for canceling the game. With Tenn already playing over 70% of any season's top 25 participants it is oblivious that that it isn't a fear of scheduling an opponent

Tennessee opted last year to have La Tech on a two home and one away schedule. Old Dominion, Stanford and Texas have been annual opponents much longer than Connecticutt. Notre Dame and DePaul have been opponents frequently and of course recently Duke annually. With seniors from Illinois, New York and Illinois the schedule can be expected to have some nearby opponents for the coming year.

One poster on the Summitt board made an interesting point that anticipation of the game had become a negative hysteria for fans and that I definitely agree. More fun to dance and cheer with fans of opponents than to get caught up in the negatives. For many years I have expressed pleasure at the greetings between the Tennessee coach and the visiting coaches from most of the other teams the Lady Vols play. The writers on hoopgulz frequently quote the players as being highly competitive on the floor and friends off.

I understand its a big deal but at the same time if UT doesn't want to play the game its up to them. UConn fans are mostly upset because they think they'll win this year so they want to play. I also do think the fans get way to upset over the outcome of that game so is probably good for them even though they don't know it.

I do have to admit I am annoyed about the recruiting accusations. The uconn fans are playing the "victim" of UT or the SEC(whoever filed the complaint) over Maya Moore and how they're so mean to accuse the great one of any such violations. The reason this bothers me is that one year ago the mother hen on that page banned me when I told her off because she claimed that Maryland and Frese had committed violations and punishment was going to be swift and harsh before the season started and that they may be banned from postseason play. Now its been a year....................still waiting for those punishments. My point is that now maybe uconn fans understand what its like for the maryland fans that had to take abuse when they accused their coach of wrong doing. I know it seems like the two things have nothing to do with eachother but at some point uconn is going to end a series for less then great reasons so they really should tread a little lighter.

Could you reference anything on the statement regarding Maya and the complaint of recruting violations?

I didn't say I think there were any violations my point is just that uconn fans shouldn't get to upset about UT backing out because someday the shoe will be on the other foot.

I was just wondering if you knew that a complaint had been filed...

There was a post on several message boards about a month ago referring to a report by local media in Knoxville regarding a complaint that had been lodged with the NCAA by the SEC regarding Maya Moore's recruitment. Nothing was apparently said about the substance of the complaint and I have heard nothing since regarding its status if, in fact, a complaint was lodged.

Does anyone know if there is any way to get information from the NCAA about pending complaints?

Jim

Usually, if there is an investigation, the NCAA will send investigators to the campus on a fact-finding trip, and interview personnel and often athletes, getting sworn statements and gathering as much pertinent information as they can. They then investigate independently to determine that there are infractions.

It's generally known when the NCAA conducts an inquiry, but they won't comment on any pending case until they reach a finding of evidence of exoneration, or that a violation or violations have occurred. Then the findings and any penalty actions are announced, and their major infractions actions are published in their infractions database.

Well to be truthful the school is told of the complaint and is given the opportunity to investigate first and if an infraction has happened then the school has an opportunity to respond with a plan before the NCAA investigates
