Despite numerous requests for its formation, the California message board barely is being used. I intentionally hired Clay Kallam to moderate it because he has thicker skin and will allow "freer" discussion than I would. If it doesn't start getting used, it will be removed. Just so you know, HoopGurlz and not ESPN is operating these forums. We wanted to keep the features you are used to, and avoid having to force you to move to the ESPN system and re-register. As such, every additional board requires resources to maintain, which I'm happy to do, as long as they are being used.
In the latter vein, I also have concerns about Florida, Mile-High (Colorado), New York and Texas.

I noticed that you omitted Washington which has less posts than New York. Its possible that Washington has been operating for a shorter period of time.
If resources are an issue I don't see the need for local forums. I would say a National Forum and then combine local forums into regions. Northeast, South, Middle America & West coast.

Washington has more posts, but fewer threads. However, if we included tenure on the independent site, it would be close to DC/MD/VA. It is our first and core message-board community and is third overall (to National, DC/MD/VA) in views.
I may have mis-written about NY. There are a lot of posts. I'm reacting more to the continued relevance of the Frazier slam board. I don't want to make these battles for communities.

The Clyde Frazier Jr board needs to continue to have relevance. Although many of the discussions are less than desireable it is important to keep his memory alive. Clyde Frazier worked in World Trade Center 2.
Many people in NYC and the tri state area view the Hoopgurlz site regularly. They may not post but they are reading and learning about girls basketball in the country.

Why don't we name our board after Frazier if it's that important?

It would be an honor to have the Hoopgurlz NYC Board named after Clyde Frazier Jr.
It could never replace the Slam Jam board because Slam Jam has no format. It has no moderator. Its just anything goes. I doubt you want Hoopgurlz to decline to that level.
There are local issues in NY. Those issues are brought out on the board. Sometimes feelings are hurt but ultimately there is an understanding about how one group feels about another. In an odd way it allows for peace to exists. Most times things are so funny people forget what they were upset about. The board has its purpose.

Glenn I know that the Cali board may be slow however I think that it is the norm for message board chatter to die down this time of year. There is nothing really going on now. Summer is over, high school ball hasn't started prospects are not committing, no new rankings are out, we've been hearing about the same 20 kids for about a year now and for most of the crew August is shut down from bball time. This may be more of a case of bad timing on the launch more than lack of interest. It may flourish start around school season, maybe not but it would have a betted chance. I like to read other boards and as with Florida and some others the feedback isn't there even for the simplest of questions from the locals no matter what time of year it is. I have said before that the dmv's interest in girls basketball is great, so I wasn't too surprized at how it took off, but even we have our down times at certain points during the year and need a boost from the IH with one of those threads that drives people irrate. Keep up the good work, love Coach Lewis and Mindi and you too Chris. Hope to see you guys in the dmv someday.

This is dead time in California, per CIF Rules.
Fall leagues start first week of September.
I would give it a few more weeks so that we can see some of the teams play.

pgcop, I hope you're right! My point of reference, unfortunately, is the board you frequent, which took off immediately. I looked at it the other day and it's like a whole other world in there - very organized, well-attended and full of relatively polite debate. It is the prototype!

That's because we MD/DC/VA/WV-region sports fans think we know EVERYTHING, and are very serious about running our mouths about ANYTHING...
And, we're ALWAYS in EVERYONE'S business...
As you well know, we have more government workers and government-contract workers--local, national, and international--than any other region in America. This surely means that we have more people here who are BORED DOING EXTREMELY RANDOM AND USELESS WORK than in any other region; and thus, more sports fans surfing message boards during those eight-hour PACK-MULE weekdays...
And it's YOUR tax dollars at work...

A really crafty way of telling the truth!
I also agree with PGC's post. This being bball downtime is most likely affecting the Cali board.
Yes Glenn, you created a monster with the DMV board, giving all of us know-it-alls a place to say we know-it -all! Thanks!!
Just wondering, what time of year was the DMV board bestowed upon us?

Of course it is organized!!!
I know our board is 'special' and I hope the other regions can achieve the same level of participation. What makes us a little different is that:
Our board is a reflection of our basketball community.
We have a nationally respected region scouting service that posts it rankings on a regular basis.
We have well-traveled, journeyman members who not only see players in our region but in others all across the country
Our region is in the middle of the Big East/ACC/CAA/Patriot/MEAC and those coaches DO read and pay attention(some even post);)
Everybody reads our board...college coaches from all over because they want our players, local newspapers(because we do a better job reporting than they do), grassroots shoe company executives..etc
For the most part our members don't hide behind there screen names and when they speak out whether you like it or hate it you have to respect it.
We have our share of characters The IH, first2no, pgcop, Rodder08, smokeyhip, fhire, teammom4, arbitraryj and a host of others that add real flavor to the our regional board and the national board.
And yes we do have an abundance of bored government works/contractors who have nothing better to do than wax poetic on your tax dollar...hence the length of this post.
And lastly a moderator that does take her task seriously and deals with the good, the bad and the totally absurd.

I nominate the IH's post for the Best Post of 2008 Award on the freaking hilarious category. I doubt we can get anyone an ESPY but maybe at year's end we can hand out some T-shirts or something.
