First Cal got Charmin Smith from Stanford and now they have snatched one of our WBB Club Circuit regulars in Kevin Morrrison. Best of luck to Kevin at Cal and helping Coach Boyle build on the rising program that exists today.

Just to squash the rumors up front, all the West Coast Elite teams will stay the same but with a different head coach of the Black team and someone else within the program running and owning it.

Catch you on the flip side, litterally!

Do we have any names of players who may follow Morrison to Cal?

Is Cal recruiting any West Coast Elite players ?

Are there any rumors of coaches to replace Smith at Stanford ?

Well I'm sure Coach Boyle hopes Hopkins comes if the Lenita Sanford/FBC connection doesn't net them Nikki Speed and/or Jasmine Dixon. Maybe if it was a year later and Kelsey Bone, Monique Oliver and Kiyana Stamps were all going to be seniors the rumor mill would be hot.

Glenn will probably speak to on it though that he doesn't believe the teammate connection plays out very often. If any of them end up at Cal I hope it's truly the school that fits their criteria besides just the coaching staff. I don't think this move was a coup attempt though.

I don't think this was very well thought through by Cal as to legal ramifications. Don't
the parents have contracts with Kevin that they have relied upon just for him to take off in the middle of the season? This will be very bad for women's basketball. Has any other
club coach taken off for an assistants job in the middle of the season?

So why should Club coaches live by rules that are different from the rest of society? Don't college coaches leave in the middle of contracts?

College coaches do not leave in the middle of the season nor can they be contacted
by other schools until they get permission from the school that they are with. Why
is this different? That is why you read about athletic director's always getting permission
to talk to coaches under contract at another school.

But college coaches do leave in the middle of a contract. A player could sign with a school and after one year the coach may leave for another location. I'm not sure I understand why you think its worse when a club coach leaves

The difference I see with this is that unlike college scholarships which provide the student athletes free education, free housing, free food in exchange to play the summer club teams actually charge a fee and parents pay this fee based upon the coaching and instruction that was presented.

I seriously doubt that any on the West Coast Elite Black team is paying money to play for them, besides food money. Most AAU coaches don't get paid to coach, so it's not like they received money to coach for the aau season!

Usually the fees come from training not the club teams themselvs althought there are exceptions. Cal had to openings so they filled them. Rarely does a college need to fill a spot during the winter when the club season is essentially dead so the timing issue is unavoidable in my opinion. He talked with his team and parents I presume and they will act accordingly to their needs. The viewing period about a month away so if someone wants to jump ship they have time.

I don't think it needs to be aired out on the board though if parents have beef with the decision. Take it to the man himself. I also think there are more people involved with WCE than just Kevin so the program will move on.

You have to realize that many coaches also have goals for themselves and if that includes coaching in college you can't get to upset if they are trying to reach their goals.

Charlesi,

I'm not sure if you have been involved in the club system, but there are no rules. And the formality of the situation really depends on the club. Only a very few have the kind of structure you are talking about. Plus, I'm sure everyone at WCE is happy for Kevin. It's a tremendous opportunity for him.

If you put yourself in the man's place it would be a no brainer. But, in all honesty the players on the elite summer club teams are there to showcase their skills and if they are not already developed to a certain extent they wouldnt be on the most elite team. College Coaches dont care who wins or loses the summer circuit games but how the player performs during the tournament that they are watching.

Does anyone know who will be taking over for Kevin with WCE?

Their names escape me at the moment but one of the other trainers and the coach of the U15's will take over the head of the Black team. The red team coach I believe is taking over the program itself. I should know their names. I bet it's posted on the website at some point.

The Red team coach's name is George Wrightster.

Good luck to George at the head of the table and I apologize for spacing on his name as we've talked on more than one occasion. There's a ton of talent in southwest as evidenced by the strength of the red team and all the other tough programs from the region, EBX, FBC, Sparks, Swish, etc...

Most AAU/Club coaches do get paid or compensated in some way. Players are paying for services that these coaches provide that high school coaches do not or will not provide. Unfortunately, the landscape has changed for high school athletes requiring them to specialize and seek out AAU/Club programs where quite frankly the coaches are often far superior in the X's and O's and understand what it takes to be recruited than high school coaches. Why do you think the NCAA has moved in to insure club coaches are NCAA approved. They see a booming market and now must legislate it before it gets out of control if it hasn't done so already.

Further, if you think the teams sponsored by Nike (West Coast Elite) and Adidas are not compensating the owners and coaches of these programs, your head is in the sand. Many of these coaches make a living off of the compensation they are provided by the likes of Nike.

It is a fact that many of these major sponsors, not only provide free gear and apparel to the coaches and players they compensate the coaches; they also require them to play in their events.

I think you would be shocked at how few of these people are actually compensated. There are a few but I think your "head in the sand" comment suggests most of them are which I don't think is the case.

Sounds like Kevin will be a great addition to the Bear's staff and be a real asset to the program. Good things are going to happen at Cal!:D
