I agree. Kara Lawson belongs on the All Decade Team, however, a limit must be established. I propose that the limit be between 10 and 12 names. Afterall, this is a team roster, correct? I will also add Rebecca Brunson to my list which rounds out my top 12.

The IH just wants to think of some of his favorite ballers to watch over the last ten years of high school ball in the immediate D.C. metropolitan area:
1. Meredith Bell/Westlake - the best jump-shooter of the last ten years in the area, with perfect footwork, perfect form, and a perfect shooting eye;

3. Rayna DuBose/Oakland Mills - the best center in the history of Howard County, and one of the best centers in the area over the last ten years;
4. Greeba Outen-Barlow/River Hill - the best guard in the history of Howard County, and one of the best guards in the area over the last ten years;

Monica Wright and Ashleigh Braxton/Forest Park - one of the best high school tag-teams in the area over the last ten years, and they put Prince William County on the local and national map; Ashleigh, as one of the best shooters and quarterbacks in the area over the last ten years; and Monica, as one of the area's best rebounders and dynamic athletes over the same period;
8. Rochelle Coleman/Paint Branch - the best player in Montgomery County public schools over the last ten years; one of the most focused players during a game, over the last ten years;

28. Shanay Baker-Brice/Theodore Roosevelt - might be the quickest player, and the fastest player with the ball, in the area over the last ten years;
29. Antionette Reese/H.D. Woodson - might be the most athletic girl to ever play basketball in the area; a multi-sport star; the area's best defender over the last ten years;
30. Shalayna Johnson/Coolidge - the most prolific scorer in the D.C. public school league over the last ten years; not that great of a skill set, but had a knack for GETTING BUCKETS;
31. Saundra Lemons/Coolidge - might be the most physical and the toughest player to ever come through the area; the best ballers, HER coaches, and even the referees were scared of her WHEN SHE CAUGHT AN ATTITUDE DURING A GAME.

Penny Marshall - The best player in the history of Virginia basketball. If you don't know her google her. She played for Stuart H.S back in the early 90's (Star in the WNBA for years)

Cathy Grimes - T.C Williams H.S - Very physical player with great basketball skill. Probably the second best player behind Dawn Staley to wear a UVA Uniform.

IH,
I never saw Najima Fauntleroy play but it is hard to believe that she was the best player in Howard Counties history instead of Alex McGuire. Alex was a Killer... Please explain to our audience the difference between the two and the reason you think she is the best ever in Howard.
Also in my opinion Wanisha, Kara, and Monique trying out for this fictional team would mean Yolanda would have to be cut. Whose spot would she take? Lastly, Rochelle Luckett was a beast but I would have to pick Kristen Boone over her. Both were very good defensive players, however Kristen Boone had opposing guards afraid to dribble the ball. She changed outcomes of games while in high school. She won at least two state chamipinships and possibly a City Title. She also lead the nation (NCAA) as a freshman in steals. Luckett also was a one handed bandit, SHE COULD PLAY AND WAS A BEAST.

Lastly, Candace Howard, Sky LuRue, and Rebbeca Brunson are the best players I have seen myself over the last ten years.
I saw Candace pull down rebounds with one hand and lead a fast break like she was MAGIC.
Sky was absoultly a joy to watch. She would beat you inside outside and took opposing players will to compete.
Rebbeca Brunson for her size revolutionized how big girls in PG played the game. I watched her also intimidate girls who were players.
That's my thoughts what are yours???

1. Arundel is in ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, not in Howard County.
2. Arundel is the most successful high school program in the area over the last ten years.
3. Alex was a 5'8" guard, who certainly did her thing at Arundel, in a highly-structured system DESIGNED for her to be the go-to player. Najima, a 6'0" SF/PF/C, was the INTANGIBLE in a highly-structured program, who didn't need a system to get off, but suppressed those instincts, and did the little things, FOR THE GOOD OF THE TEAM.
4. My All-Decade Team is not a tryout team; it is my team of twelve.
5. Kristen was limited, at best, as an offensive player, especially in the half-court. 75% of her points came off of steals and in-transition. Also, for all of her defensive prowess, against real teams she usually had as many turnovers as steals. A TREMENDOUS nose for on-the-ball steals, and one of the best from around here, however.
6. Candace's problem was that she brought off-the-court stuff on to the court. And also, even though she could play defense, she never really cared about it.
7. At least Schuye kept off-the-court stuff off-the-court.
8. Georgetown was lucky to get Rebekka; she could have gone to Tennessee or Connecticut.

Penny Marshall - The best player in the history of Virginia basketball. If you don't know her google her. She played for Stuart H.S back in the early 90's (Star in the WNBA for years).

Her last name is actually Moore, she graduated from Stuart in 87 or 88 I believe and yes she was a heck of a player. She went on to play at Long Beach State and only played 3 years in the WNBA. Regardless, she was a terrific player in her day.

Okay I blew identfying the appropriate county. Yes your All-Decade Team is yours to pick but I challenge picking Yolanda for that team. Jasmine Thomas and Monica Wright deserve to be on an All- Decade team before Yolanda in my humble opinion. Now I am a PG guy and Ms. Lavender killed many teams in the nation her junior year, but she played on a bad Forestville team for two years, and did not play high school ball her senior year for whatever reasons. In this case you might want to think about picking from the supplemental draft. :)

I don't see Jasmine Thomas on your list though she on most others. Any all decade team has to include her. In fact, with her body of work over all 4 years, she's one of the top 5 in history from this area. Period.

JT had a helluva 4 year run at Oakton. However the kids that played at the turn of the century made this area the hotbed that it is today!! There was way more players akin to each other and so many to choose from it was a recruiters paradise!!!! So some of the players on my list that you may not have heard of had skillset and athletecism that were as good or better than JT. The kids on my list had no wholes in their games some off the court issue no doubt but on the court a coaches dream!!!! :p

The IH feels that there are NO girls who are still playing high school ball, NOR are there any graduating seniors, in this immediate D.C.-area who could do ANYTHING against ANYONE at their positions on the IH's All-Decade Team.
For about 4 minutes of a 32 minute game, the following girls MIGHT be able to do a little something to make their match-ups on the IH's team stand up straight:
1. Jasmine Thomas, 5'9", 2007, Oakton/Vienna, Va.;
2. Camille Collier, 5'7", 2007, Sidwell Friends/Washington, D.C.;
3. Lynetta Kizer, 6'3", 2008, Potomac/Woodbridge, Va.;
4. Chasity Clayton, 6'1", 2008, Thomas Edison/Alexandria, Va.;
5. Shanel Harrison, 5'11", 2008, Good Counsel/Olney, Md.
6. Tierra Ruffin-Pratt, 5'10", 2009, T.C. Williams/Alexandria, Va.;
7. Nyree Williams, 6'1", 2009, Howard/Ellicott City, Md.

Are you kidding? Do you know how many forward and center in this area in 10,11,12 grade are soooo much better than her. She is a defensive stopper no doubt and finishes ok but to call her the best or one of the best at that position......Oh no.... Rebounds great, blocks shot all day......but where is the offensive moves?? I know of not one coach who had to design up any plays to stop Nyree? But again, she does play for Team Unique.......lol. So there is your non Biased opinion .......lol

1. There is nothing going on at Howard High School--coaching-wise, strategy-wise, or playing-wise--that indicates that a real talent can show what she can REALLY do.
2. Howard County basketball is currently some of the worst basketball of any county in the entire MD/DC/VA region, on top of all of that.
3. YOU just called Nyree a defensive stopper, a great rebounder, and an all-day shot-blocker.
4. Have you seen Nyree play THIS spring, with the Baltimore Charm AAU or Team Unique Select? Your opinion of her offensive game would be drastically different, cousin.
5. Designing an offense to highlight a specific player, or a defense to contain a specific player, is a function of coaching strategy and team execution. 'NUFF SAID.
6. Nyree is one of the most athletic players in the entire MD/DC/VA region, and because of her work ethic, is improving at a rate as much as anyone in a gym in our region.
7. Despite her wiry-ness, Nyree is one of the toughest and most physical players in our region, regardless of class--and, can defend all five positions at the high school level.
8. In the IH's opinion, she is the best rebound/put-back player in the immediate area since Nalini Miller.
9. Assuming you have connections to various ACC and Big East schools, ask some of them what THEY think about Nyree's talent and potential.
10. Who do YOU think are better 4's in this immediate area right now, regardless of class? Can you name three, other than Lynetta Kizer?

The player on my list represent the best players I've ever seen play in this region. Its no disrespect to Jasimine but the kids on my list in my opinion just had a better body of work against better competition. This is not to say Jas would not have been a good player in their era. The difference is all of the players on my list played in the same era! Strickly based on analysis but how I wish that basketball in our region was that good again! U can ask any coach that been in the game for 10 year or more and they will tell you that as good as our region is right now its nothing like it was. As IH said the kids in the area now could not do anything with kids on my list!

What sets the girls apart from many in the modern period is the genius level basketball IQ that so many of them possessed! What I mean by no wholes in their game is that they all were legit triple threats and then took pride and strapped up on defense specially against each other.
Mandikova Clark was a Burger All-American with all trimmings and in my opinion she was the weakiest guard on my list Latonya Blue was one the most athletic and physical defenders of that era. She was fast enufff to defend fast guards like Jaz but long imposing at 5'11 to defend any Center. Tionka Hodge and Jimea Barner were ahead of their time! There are really no player now that play like Tionka did but my best comparison would be Sharnae Brice with a better jumpshot!!! And the best comparison for Jimea Barner is she has none at the guard position she had the same impact as Schuye had if she was dialed in put 50 pts on her ledger! She had every tool imaginable uncheckable 1 on 1 and she had that swag to go with it if you just left her alone she would just give you 25 but talk smack 50 plus easy!!!

I think everyone on this board belives that JT is a GREAT PLAYER. If people on this board do not think she stacks up to those that played before her, she will have to be included on a list in the next decade.

I believe that many of you did not witness the playing of many of the players listed. For the record Fhire's team in my opinion would beat EVERYONE LISTED, AND DaList's PG team would play them for a fictional championship. :cool:

Because:
1. As I said, they were probably the most productive duo in high school in our area over the last ten years, as a duo (3 State Finals appearances, and 2 State Championships in 4 years), and as individuals (both All-Mets; Monica All-Everything nationally her senior year; Ashleigh one of the top long-range shooters in America her last spring/summer season).
2. Their four years together at Forest Park made Prince William County girls basketball relevant. Even today, with Kizer and Moorer and Jackson (oh, my!) running around down there, and Shegog down in Stafford County, and the recent success of Stonewall Jackson, there's nothing going on down that way approaching the significance of what Ashleigh and Monica did for that area.

The IH understands what you are saying and where you are coming from, fhire; but he must disagree with you.
Historically, the Brice-Wheeler Theodore Roosevelt four years really weren't that much of a big deal, when one looks at the DCIAA. They merely happened to be THE team in the DCIAA at that time.
The league had been DOMINATED over the years by H.D. Woodson; Dunbar did a few things for a few years; then, TRoose did their thing; now, H.D. Woodson is back out in front.
What made the Brice-Wheeler TRoose crew stand out was NOT what they did during the school season; it was the attention they got during the spring/summer, as they were one of the first and few teams in this area to stay together YEAR-ROUND, playing together in the spring/summer seasons under the Maryland Sparks banner.
The Mitch-Coleman St. John's teams were kinda the same thing, only with a different twist. Those SJC teams were actually kinda regular by WCAC top-team standards, and weren't even the best SJC team over the last ten years.
(That distinction is reserved for the Davalyn Cunningham-Darielle Warley team, when Shawntese Charles was a freshman. Actually, that was eleven years ago, I believe. How about the Dawn Chriss-Che'la Turner-Nicole Jules teams, at the beginning of the last ten years?)
The Mitch-Coleman duo made its mark in the spring/summer seasons, as members of DC Nike Select--Bishop McNamara, plus a few other local talents with major national political pedigree--and of the Fairfax Stars.
As a matter-of-fact, the Mitch-Coleman duo made it fashionable for all talented Fairfax Stars girls to go to SJC...

This has been a fun thread to read. As a former varsity and AAU coach I tend to favor the kids who came through school in the late 90’s. I’ve had the great pleasure to coach or coach against these players.
Davalyn Cunningham 6’0 PF/DeDe Warley 6’2 C- Seton/St .John’s- perhaps the greatest post combination we’ll see for a long time. Their transfer from Seton to St. John’s sent shockwaves through the WCAC and made St. John’s who they are today. Both were dominant and impossible to matchup against.
Ginji Perry 6’0 SF Seton- At a time where it was uncommon to see players her size on the wing, she was a terror on the defensive end and a tremendous athlete. She had a knack for making the winning play during crunch time.
Kia Williams 6’0 PF Largo- Tremendous leaper and force around the basket. She was part of one of the best inside/outside combos with Felicia Harris 5’6 SG. The matchup between Williams/Ginji Perry in the IAABO final-OT game is a classic.
Sharron Francis 5’8 G Suitland- Fearless competitor and tough to contain because of her speed and athleticism. She is the one who put Suitland on the map.
Schuye LaRue 6’3 G/F Archbishop Carroll/Kara Lawson 5’9 G/F Sidwell Friends/West Springfield- These two Parade All Americans were ranked nationally in the top 5 of their high school class. They were the subject of a major front page story in Washington Post. Schuye did it all on the court for Carroll and was truly a stat sheet stuffer. Had by far the best game I’ve seen a high school player have her junior season when she had 37pts, 18 rebs, 7 blks, 8 stls vs. No. 1 ranked and unbeaten St. John’s in the Bishop Walsh (Cunningham/Warley’s Sr. season). For those who didn’t see LaRue play think Kevin Garnett with a dash of George Gervin. IMO when motivated there hasn’t been anyone close to her talent. Kara Lawson is by far the best winner to play high school ball here in the last decade. Her teams won championships every year be it high school or AAU. Kara simply did it all for her teams. She was too strong for guards to matchup and too fast for bigs to keep up with her. Kara had the best basketball IQ by far and was a killer in the fourth quarter. Again, I haven’t seen a guard come close to matching her ability.
Rebecca Brunson 6’2 C Oxon Hill- Simply the most dominant pivot player of her generation. Could have started and more than hold her own at center as a seventh grader vs high school varsity players. Tremendous athlete, powerful rebounder and scorer who could run the floor faster than most guards.
Kalicka France- 5’9 G Bishop McNamara- Toughest competitor, I’ve seen play on the high school level. Another player with a tremendous basketball IQ who always found a way to make the play for the win. She’s the one who started it all at McNamara.

Other impact players of note:
Anesia Smith 5’9 G Mount Vernon
Terrelle Waller 5’5 G Riverdale Baptist
Quintina Walker 5’10 PF Seton
Karlita Washington 5’8 G H.D. Woodson
Kiarsha Curtis 5’8 G Bladensburg
Katrina Martin 5’10 PF Seton
Shawntese Charles 5’9 G/F St. John’s
Mia Chapman 5’5 PG Seton
Maia Saffell 6’0 F Wheaton

The top teams in the late 90’s were stacked with talented players. I still follow the game closely today and enjoy it. I feel like the talent is certainly spread more evenly amongst the teams of today.

I must say that we are really fortunate to be in this region because there have been some tremendous ball players who we've seen grow up here. In addition to viewing some tremendous matchups during the high school season and during the summer with our summer leagues and AAU nationals. I remember Karlita when she played for the old Oxon Hill Roadrunners AAU........definitely got it done for Headen at HD Woodson. She was the straw that stirred the drink for them. Another player I forgot to list was Cotelia Bond Young 5'6 G Capitol Christian/Seton who was one of the most proflic scorers in the history of the WCAC. Smiley did everything Coach Brown needed her to do. Another personal favorite of mine is Aisha Williams 5'3 PG Newport Prep. IH, I'm very impressed with your list.

Sports fans, the IH sees merit on both sides of this one. I think that neither one was/is particularly interested in being a defensive stopper.
I'd say that Candice was stronger, more physical, and had quicker and higher hops; Andrea has more hang time, and has more foot speed.
Candice had a tighter handle, with more tricks; Andrea is faster with the ball.
Candice was better in the post, and as a point guard; Andrea is more of a traditional wing/guard.
Candice was more accurate as a jump shooter; Andrea has more range.
Attitude-wise on the court (on the offensive end), Andrea is a boy; Candice was a man.

Yeah, Kiarsha was legit; my only problem with her was she seemed to be a little too playful on the court, instead of just going out there and straight mash opponents off from the opening tap. Some quick hands, too; I'd like to have seen her play a little better position defense, though.
In a real game that was tight, however, she'd just make plays on both sides of the floor, on multiple possessions in-a-row. Nice street cred, back then, for her.

IH, that a pretty good assessment of Kiarsha Curtis. She came at a time where it seemed to me every PG County team had a good SG. BTW, she was the starting 2G on that allstar 16U Beltway Lady Cougars AAU team with Kara Lawson, Schuye LaRue, Katrina Martin, Mia Chapman and crew. Karlita Washington definitely had swag. When she walked in the gym you knew she was a BALLER. Fhire, you're right that St. John's team was tough. They certainly benefited from the Seton transfers (Davalyn Cunningham, Deedee Warley, Danielle Shelton) and Mollie Owings who transferrred in from Good Counsel all prior to their junior year. Add them to Shawntese Charles who just came off of a monster Freshman year. Those 5 or 6 St. John's vs. Seton games over the next two years certainly had added meaning. No one came close to beating them their senior year. They went 34-1 winning the WCAC, City Title. Their only loss came against Carroll at the Bishop Walsh in Cumberland with Schuye's monster game along with Candace Wilkins and Kiana Fobbs. Giving credit where credit is due St. John's has had a decade of tremendous teams.
