I was speaking with a friend and a kids name came up in the conversation. My friend said the kid didn't think she was that good and was wondering if playing BB was right for her. Now i've seen the kid and she has potential out of this world, not to mention the fact that she's a good student and is around 6' so my guess is she will be playing somewhere on that alone because I see time and time again schools take more chances on the bigs. I asked him what was his response and he told me he was dumbfounded and couldn't put his words together so he asked me for help. Well my thoughts and yours are welcome as well is that the kid just needs to keep working and get her confidence. You have the tools and like a mechanic or carpenters apprentice, you just need to learn how to use them.

So many times kids are concerned about scoring, well parents as well and as I have stated time and time again, colleges don't care about how many points you score. Let me give you an example, if I went out and dropped 30 on Cedric or Mike, does that mean I am a great player? No it just means an old guy scored a bunch of points on two sissies. We had a kid that had numerous 40 point games, while averaging over 20, in HS and she wasn't even offered a scholarship. I am talking about against 5A public schools, Klein Forest if I am not mistaken so that in itself tells you scoring isn't everything.

Young lady, I have seen you and I am sure you will be that player you want to be. Remember the story of Diante Clay http://forums.hoopgurlz.com/showthread.php?t=2645, a kid who played less than 30 minutes her entire varsity career and now look at her.

Let me close with another story, ironically another kid from Bellaire, Bianca Smith. This kid struggled with her weight, shot, ball handling and didn't even start until her JUNIOR year in HS and now she plays in the Big 12, in fact

Never let ANYONE tell you what you can't do in life and good luck!

sim111,

I realize this isn't the spirit of the article, but it seems you were referring to a player who averaged 20 points a game against major competition- what exactly was the defect in her game that kept her from being offered a scholarship?

She was the best player on a bad team. Took around half of the teams shots so the numbers were sort of misleading.

It was great talking with you as well. So many coaches look at these profiles and assume a kid has to be such and such to get the job done however 2 kids come to mind right away, Andrea Riley who is an All American at Oklahoma State and for A&M star Aquaneshia Franklin who is in the WNBA.

Height has so much to do with how kids are ranked and I understand that to an extent but if you can play, you can play and your baby can play. I guess I would answer the coaches the same way you put in your post "She is beating every PG she has run across no matter the size and when they do manage to get her posted up she boxes out better than most of our big girls and comes out with the rebound" I would also maybe mention the success of several small guards and the fact that Rice will have a 5' foot freshman point guard, DeFranz as well as U of H with their own 5' Porsche Landry. Both of these kids are great players and your baby is bigger than they are.

Good luck, I am sure everything will work out. Keep me posted, my email address is simmiecolson@yahoo.com
