That's the question Erica Metzler posed to several players:

This incidentally sets up our new column, debuting on Friday, on beauty and basketball.

As I was (impatiently) waiting for my daughter to finish putting on her mascara before leaving for a game last weekend, I must have shown my exasperation. With a wink and a grin, my daughter looked at me and said, "hey-- you've gotta look good on the court!". Thanks for reminding us that no matter how competitive they may be on the court, these kids are still teenaged girls and need to revel in that a bit!

...but the black finger-nail polish ALWAYS gives the IH the heebie-jeebies...

Well with NYC girls the makeup starts at 11 years old. Life was so much easier when they were only in 5th grade. Once the girls go to Junior High they always show up to practice wearing makeup.

Is this only in NYC ?

but usually around age 13. And, IH, my daughter is currently wearing that beloved black nail polish! I guess she picked it to match the bruise on that jammed finger she got last week......

Oh, JESUS! Ever since the IH was forced to date a girl--when he was a freshman in high school, sports fans--because she put A SPELL on the IH, he's always been leery of the the shiny black nail polish on the hoopster honeys.

She used to wear the shiny dark black or blood red nail polish (or the equally-spellbinding French nails...) whenever she and the IH used to hang out.
A Countess Dracula, perhaps?
The IH's mob used to tell him not to try to holler at that girl; but, the IH's "unchecked male ego" got the best of him. The next thing you know, the IH could never get her completely out of his mind until his sophomore year in college, sports fans...

Of course, you all know that the IH first met her at HER basketball game. And she was wearing the black nail polish...

One of my favorite stories along these lines came about 8 or 9 years ago when I was coaching the men's team at a small college. Our women had a player so attractive that, after the women's game ended and my team was warming up, six times out of 10 the other men's coach would come up and say "Geez, where'd you get #33? She's gotta be the best looking player in the conference."

So, following her looks to opportunity, this woman gets cast in a rap video and is given, free of charge, an elaborate set of fake braids as part of her costume for the video. The new look causes even more guys to swoon... but within a few days she yanked them out.

"Why?"

"I just don't feel like an athlete with long hair."

Oh the benefits of SBH(Store Bought Hair) you can always snatch it out on a moments notice.

I had a girls on my team who use to put on makeup and put on strong perfume before games and practices. It drove me nuts. I had girls that would have their nails done before practice just to get them broken. Not knowing any better during my coaching debut, I told a girl no makeup or perfume at my practices. Wow! Not only did her mom come to the practice, but she brought along her female comrades. I felt like I was doing to be hung upside down and whipped with a horse whip lol. :o

After the meeting, I undestood their feelings. I was able to get them to cool down with the perfume though.:)

All in all, these girls wanted to be girls and I would never even try to take that away from them. Girls wanted to play ball and look good at the same time.

When I see girls walking around with men underwear on and with their pants hanging down, it makes me a bit ill. I'm not a fan of that at all. I'd rather them look like young ladies. Just my opinion.

I'm all for girls looking like ladies off the court. On the court I don't allow makeup. I have no problem with perfume. I've never had a parent complain.
