As school comes to an end for many kids, those leaving the 8th grade are about to go into another chapter in their lives. Since most HS get kids from 2, 3 or 4 MS, some kids will not be playing on the A team in the 9th grade even though they started on their MS team. This is a fact and you should prepare them for it now, in other words, know where they are and work on what they need. There will be some instances where politics will play a part on who goes where so just be ready.

My experience with HS sucked for my kids. My oldest was at a school where there was so much BS that it was unreal. I have never been around so many cut throat people in my life, or so I thought. The parents were trying to get the head coach fired because one of his assistants backstabbed the poor man so he could get the job, it was sickening. I chose to send my baby to another school, based on lies and promises by the HS coach there.

I am a very unique individual that was in a very unique situation because my daughter had schools willing to accept a verbal before she even entered HS. The initial HS coach told me AAU was useless and colleges looked at it like ghetto ball, whatever the hell that means. I have never met a person that could look you in the eye and lie to you without blinking like this woman could. She also told several college coaches she quit coaching because I slapped her. I have never raised my hand to a woman and this realley pissed me off but it got worse with her replacement.

Although he appears to be a nice guy, basketball philosophy 101 would merit an F because I don't like people who try to tear kids down in order to mold them into what they think they should be, turn kids against each other or try and make everyone equal because even though I believe in the team concept, everyone is not equally talented so rewarding someone just to reward them in my opinion is wrong. The guys take on AAU was he hated it because the girls got to know each other, therefore wouldn't compete hard against each other. Ironically he started coaching AAU and has tried to make all of the kids play on the same team or be in jeopardy of not playing varsity. He also goes around and tell folks how he made my daughter and how he got her in college, all of which are lies but some folks want to pump themselves up because of their ego. I have no ego, nor do I have a problem calling folks out. I can't stand people that mislead others to try and get an edge. There are many great HS coaches out there howvere you should do your research and not just ask parents of kids on the team, find some parents of kids that have graduated or were cut because parents also have lied to me as well. Good luck!

Sim,

I enjoy reading your posts because you tell it like you see it. When we looked at the high school my daughter would attend next year, our main concern was that she go somewhere that had great academics. There were three schools that fit the critieria and we let her decide which one she would attend. I tried to convince her to team with another friend of hers who is a great player, who most felt was one of the top middle school guards in the city- my daughter being one of the others; however that didn't work out. The best girls high school program in the city, Beach, is a powerhouse every season, but it is not one of the better high schools academically or for safety. One of the top players in the class of 2009 in the country attends the school, and they pretty much will dominate the city next year. Beach will continue to do well because they have an outstanding coach, but they will not accumulate all of the talent they have in years past. Both my daughter and her friend will, in all liklihood make varsity, and probably start or receive major playing time. Because of several factors teams from Savannah usually don't advance very far in the state,(other than Beach) they will have to play AAU/Summer Ball to gain true recognition/exposure, but I believe they are up to the challenge. My recommendation is when players choose schools they look very hard at academics first and then at basketball. The same as many suggest for college choices.
