I was sitting back processing several things that are happening with GBB and I had a flashback. I guess this was the summer of 2004, I was emailing everyone whose name was associated with Parade, Street and Smith and Scout that I could find. My question was what criteria was being used for these kids being listed on All American lists, how the rankings were figured out and other things associated with the hoopla that goes with all of it.
I believe I contacted 10 or 11 folks and only 2 responded back to me. One was a guy that I would have knock down drag out words of war with, Glenn Nelson. I am hot headed and sometimes a tad bit too agressive however Mr Nelson, as I soon found out, was the same way. Well before we had our spat, Glenn emailed me back after viewing DVDs he bought from HoopsTV.com and asked if the PG was my kid. He was nice enough to set a profile up for her and the rest is history. As I have stated before, I jumped the gun and thought he was a yes man for the big boys and he probably thought I was some psycho dad, he was probably more correct with his assumption than I was and over the years I have come to know and understand what he goes through in order to promote the game many don't care about and this is a guy I consider a friend even though many say I am only the moderator for Texas so I will keep my mouth shut :)
The other guy was Clay Kallam and Clay told me all of the awards and stuff didn't matter if my daughter was being recruited heavily because the bottom line was she would get a free education. I thought Clay was the biggest idiot in the world for blowing me off with some BS that didn't answer my question however as time has passed, I have read almost everything this guy has wrote and the bottom line is he was correct, 100%. I wish I would have absorbed his advice earlier, it would have saved me lots of stressful days and I really appreciate the stories like "Parental Reality Check" and "Exposure Or Be Exposed". This is very good stuff and should be a must read for not only all parents with kids playing basketball, but the players, especially the younger ones as well. Many of them don't really understand what this is about and what it takes
I truly appreciate what these guys, along with Chris and staff, have done to try and keep folks abreast on whats happening NATIONWIDE. It's good for Texas to have 3 teams finish in the top 6 at BOO, the mother lode of them all and the great thing about it all is Glenn, even though we almost came to blows, was man enough to forget about our misunderstandings and ask me if I wanted to be a moderator, along with the fact he completely overlooked last years Showtime problems from the MTW camp to cover the guys DS event because after all, the HG folks are REALLY doing this for the girls.
Oh yeah, last but not least, parents, coaches and players, please listen. If any of you are wondering why the guys don't have some players listed, send a video, it worked for me and it can work for you!
