Sometimes I have no patience in GBB, being that I don't get paid for this . Many things I feel are unwarranted and pettyso at times I can go from Wilt, the greatest offensive player to Bill, the greatest defensive player at the drop of a dime however I really like helping kids get better so at the end I have to go Spock, either Dr or Mr, with folks. I remember back in school when teachers would prep us before an exam and ask how many kids were ready. The answer usually was the majority were however after the grading was done, the majority was not. I take the time to send out what I feel is helpful information that will guide folks along the way because almost every parent thinks their kid is better than what they are. They compare school ball to AAU which is frightening, they compare coaching philosophies which is also frightening and it really behooves me.

Our team cohosted a certified NCAA event this weekend, in fact we had 3 such events in the Houston area out of 45 nationwide.

I took a peek at the summer events that have been certified and right now 41 are listed however that should double by June http://www.ncaa.org/wps/portal/home?WCM_GLOBAL_CONTEXT=/wps/wcm/connect/NCAA/Sports+and+Championship/General+Information/Certified+Basketball+Events/Event-league+Lists/summer_womens_event

The point I am making is with the various events going on, one would wonder if coaches will attend. I am here to tell you if the tournament has players colleges are looking at, yes they will come. Let me also say that I can't tell you how many times I have heard about colleges going to see one kid and leave with another, it happens all the time plus if a school is really interested, they better show up or maybe they were only MILDLY interested or not interested at all. Colleges get more bang for the buck going to these events because the better kids are playing in the summer. If you think I am lying, tell me how many college coaches you saw during the HS season.

I was surprised at what these CCs look at, in fact when Sydney, my baby, was being recruited a coach spoke to our Director and said they noticed how she supported her team while taking a break on the bench and marvelled over her getting them water during timeouts. They also notice kids who talk trash on the court, make faces or excuses, banter with zebras and unless you are the next Maya or Candace, many schools are not going to take a chance on a kid with problems, this is a fact along with scholarships are year to year.

If your young 12,13 or 14 year old kid, is ready for the heat, then by all means dive into these events and being young and ready means they can compete with varsity athletes right now and boy I saw many this weekend that could, however if they are having problems with kids their own age, let them stay home and work on their skills. The good thing about all of this is the younger kids have time and parents need to be patient and only worry about their kid getting better. I hate repeating this over and over because all you have to do with most of this is use common sense because if it's for the kid, it will happen if you follow my blueprint.

I still think there are HS coaches out who have connections and work to help the kids who don't or can't travel, I met such a man this weekend but he probably is in the minority. I also know of several guys who go out of their way to help any kid, I was with several of them this weekend, even those who didn't play for their club while the parents spent 1000s of dollars over the years with someone else. Both of these type of folks are to be commended and if a kid is fortunate enough to play in one of these EXPOSURE events, they better be ready because there is nothing worse than putting a child in over their head so they can be EXPOSED I saw several 8th graders competing at our event however one stood out that seperated her from the rest. Her name is Minta Spears and her court sense along with her BB-IQ are beyond her years. The kid went up against our top players and didn't get flustered one bit, held her composure and didn't back down, BTW, she plays the 1, so this let's me stamp real deal right now. I remebered the kid winning a 3pt shooting contest as a 6th grader against 10,11 and 12th graders and was told she made over 50 threes in a 3 minute drill, yep a 3 minute drill.

And last, I want to share a story with you about a kid, Bianca Smith, that I met while she was just in the 7th grade. She played MS and HS ball with my oldest daughter and her story is one parents should store in their memory bank. She was always a good player, eager to listen, very manerable and was willing to work, problem was being a good player sometimes isn't enough with the talent Houston has to offer. This kid made a major jump between her 10th and 11th grade years to become one of the deadliest shooters in the city because she always worked on her weaknesses, every chance she got. She is now playing in the B12 for Colorado, she was B12 POW this season and she also didn't hit the exposure events until she was ready.

Excellent post! I was at the tournament you speak of and my daughter was one of the 8th graders participating. What you said about your daughters recruiting process and what the coaches where looking at is invaluable information. Kids and parents have heard this before but it seems everyone tends to think that their "game" is all they need to work on. Players and parents from our Organization will get a copy of this post.

Thanks
Bee
