My local paper (Washington Post) does not provide equal coverage of the boys and girls high school sports. One example of many: Tonight I went to the online paper to look at the catholic school standings, and the boys results were up to date, whereas the girls results had not been updated since December.

I've also noticed that the paper provides significantly more coverage to the boys than the girls. Is this true in other areas of the country? What is the justification????

I feel that this is a disgrace. Do you agree?

Having worked for a newspaper that covers high-school sports extensively, but probably boys a bit more than girls, I think you should voice your concern, as well as get others to do the same. If you are the first to complain, you'll likely get this response - "We cover sports and events according to the interest they generate." How do they gauge that interest? Not by numbers, but by gut. If there are 20 people at every girls game they cover, they'll assume lack of interest. If 100 people call or write to question the amount of coverage, they'll start assuming heightened interest.

Another thing you can do ... :) ... is tell us when there are good stories (not this kid is really good, but this kid plays basketball, helps raise her sister and is on the honor roll), we'll write them and you can send the Washington Post links to our stories!
