"Small, slow, white girl." That is what Becky Hammons College Coach, which took over mid way through her college career, wrote beside her name...according to ESPN.com. Hammon says that "there was a big shot on the recruiting circuit telling her she couldn't play at Purdue (she later scored 23 points against the Boilermakers). He told her to "think about schools a little bit lower."
I understand that it is becoming more rare, with the handlers and promoters and the pedigree that now must come with the players to make any type of All American squad to even get noticed in a tryout ...but, Becky Hammon a 5'6" Mid Major College Player has stepped up in her career to prove herself on the court and she has challenged peoples perception of her over and over and over.
Not only did Becky lead her mid major college team to a #4 ranking in the country, she has been playing in the WNBA for eight seasons. During her initial tryouts she was knocked down and shoved around to discourage her and that small 5'6" frame...they didnt immediately see the size of her heart...
This is an inspirational story to never give up... and I have said it before and will say it again. We can measure a players height all day, but, the size of the heart is immeasurable and can make giants among players, even when they are 5'6".
