Redmond 70 Garfield 45

The Redmond Mustangs lead virtually wire to wire overwhelming a very young Garfield Bulldogs squad for their 10th victory in a row. Redmond was never challenged. Using an aggressive 2-3 zone defense the Mustangs forced dozens of turnovers in the first half while building up an insurmountable advantage. After one quarter it was 23-8, the halftime score was 44-19 and after three quarters the Mustangs led 61-26.

To the Bulldogs credit they played hard the entire game on both ends of the court. As they continue to gain much needed experience this year they show flashes of a very bright future. I feel that they will be a real force in the league again by next season. Freshman post Cora McManus has good size and athleticism, and sophomore wings Alyse Harris and Demarea Caples have the type of speed, desire and skill set that will make them true forces by their senior years. Harris led the Bulldogs with 14 points with McManus having 11 and Caples adding 7 points.

For the Mustangs junior wing Courtney Martin led all scorers with 21 points while collecting 6 boards, senior guard Mary Petrie had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists and sophomore guard Chandler Jones had 10 points.

Redmond’s raises it record to 6-2 in KingCo 4A’s Mountain division and 12-2 overall. Garfield falls to 1-7 in KingCo’s 4A Lake Division and 3-10 overall.

Great job by Redmond!! I underestimated them at the beginning of the season based on last years record. Great incoming class and Courtney Martin is a scorer!

Lake Washington got back on track with a win tonight over Woodinville. Juarez leads the way with 14 pts, 4rbs, 3 assists. Coffee and Lewis with 11pts apiece and Wilson with 6 assists. After a close 1st half LW broke away in the 3rd with a 22 pt quarter and scoring more in the quarter than they had in the whole 1st half.

The Franklin Quakers ended Redmond's 10 game winning streak in defeating the Mustangs 59-51 at Redmond in KingCo 4A league play Friday.

Franklin was clearly the more focused, aggressive and hungry team as the game started, sprinting out to a 14-5 first quarter lead. Redmond continued its sluggish play in the second quarter falling behind by 13 points before finally waking up and beginning to execute on both sides of the floor, cutting the lead to 27-21 at halftime.

The third quarter was a rough, sloppy affair with Redmond outscoring the Quakers 9-8. Redmond made a run at Franklin in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 40-40 and looking like they were ready to take control. Franklin failed to back down, running and gunning through the final stretch and holding off the Mustangs for a well earned 59-51 victory.

Franklin was led by junior guard Carol Howard, who had three big three pointers in the first half and junior post Kayla Williams with 16 points each. Junior guard Jocelyn Jones added 12.

The Mustangs were led by junior wing Courtney Martin and senior guard Mary Petrie who each had 14 points. Martin added 12 boards for her 6th double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Chandler Jones continued her recent solid play with 10 points.

Redmond’s falls to 6-3 in KingCo 4A’s Mountain division and 12-3 overall. Franklin moves to 5-4 in KingCo’s Lake Division and 8-6 overall.

A good game between the Narrows League powers, both who should be contenders for a top-10 spot in the state.

Bellarmine broke out to a few leads, including up by 10 in the middle of the second, but Mount Tahoma was able to make runs and get right back into it.

Sophomore Mechela Barnes led the Lions with 23 points, senior ReZina TecleMariam had 16 and freshman Sarah Hartwell had 14. Both Hartwell and Barnes are young players I'm excited to see again this season.

Samms had just nine points for Mount Tahoma, but she had about nine or 10 blocks, too.

Totally concur with sjducky, and the game was very exciting.

In the first league game, Mt. Tahoma beat Bellarmine by 1pt. If you saw the first game, you would give total credit to Bellarmine for the great match up with Samms and Hartwell holding Samms to 9pts.

Can't wait for the next game!
