With this week's quadruple verbal commitments by:

- April SYKES/5'11/sg (5-star rated, nationally ranked #2 overall)
- Brooklyn POPE/6'2/sf (5-star rated, nationally ranked #9 overall)
- Jasmine DIXON/6'1/sg (5-star rated, nationally ranked #26 overall)
- Chelsey LEE/6'2/pf (4-star rated, nationally ranked #36 overall)

on top of last week's verbal commitment by:

- Nikki SPEED/5'9/pg (5-star rated, nationally ranked #27 overall)

to RUTGERS, the Scarlet Knights have temporarily assumed the #1 recruiting class for 2008, overtaking Tennessee, Connecticut, and LSU.

Let's take a look at the interim top recruiting classes from the Class of 2008 (as of 10/27/2007), and based on the following arbitrary value system:

Primary:
#01 to #10 (5-stars): 10 pts

#80 to #95 (4-stars): 03 pts
UNRANKED (4-stars): 03 pts

#96 to #100 (3-stars): 02 pts

OTHERS: 01 pt

Secondary: (to break tie between schools with same total primary pts)
if number of 5-star players is n, then add 0.n

There are only six (6) 5-star rated 2008 prospects who have yet to make their commitments:

#03 - Glory JOHNSON/6'3/pf (Duke, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt)
#06 - Nneka OGWUMIKE/6'2/pf (Baylor, Duke, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Stanford, Texas, USC)
#07 - Cierra BRAVARD/6'4/c (Florida State, Kentucky, Maryland, Miami Fla, Ohio State, Pittsburgh)
#14 - Ayana DUNNING/6'3/c (Illinois, LSU, Ohio State, Rutgers, USC)
#18 - Liz LAY/6'1/pf (Oklahoma, Rutgers, Washington)
#25 - Shawna-Lei KUEHU/5'10/sg (Cal, Gonzaga, Hawaii, Oklahoma, USC)

Based on the following current 2008 recruiting points standings (as of Oct 28, 2007):

#01 - Rutgers (42.4 value pts)
#02 - Tennessee (38.4 value pts)
#03 - Connecticut (35.3 value pts)
#04 - LSU (33.2 value pts)
#05 - Duke (22.2 value pts)
#06 - USC (19.2 value pts)
#07 - North Carolina (19.1 value pts)

The following are interesting scenarios:

1) North Carolina can move up to #5 if JOHNSON commits to the Tar Heels (which will bring them up to 29.2 value pts), and both USC (still in the running for DUNNING and KUEHU) and Duke (still in the running for OGWUMIKE) don't get any further 5-star commits

2) USC can move up to:
- #5 if either DUNNING or KUEHU commits to the Women of Troy (which will bring them up to 29.3 and 28,3 value pts. respectively) and OGWUMIKE does not commit to Duke
- #3 if both DUNNING and KUEHU commit to the Trojans (which will bring them up to 37.4 value pts)

3) Duke won't move up any higher than its current #5 standing even if OGWUMIKE commits to the Blue Devils (which will bring them up to 32.3 value pts)

4) If DUNNING commits to the Lady Tigers (which will bring them up to 42.3 value pts), LSU can move up to:
- #2 if JOHNSON does not commit to Tennessee
- #3 if JOHNSON commits to Tennessee

5) If JOHNSON commits to the Lady Vols (which will bring them up to 48.5 pts), Tennessee can regain the #1 standing only if Rutgers (still in the running for DUNNING and LAY) does not obtain any further 5-star commits

6) If DUNNING and/or LAY commits to the Scarlet Knights, Rutgers will clinch the #1 recuriting class for 2008!

Is this an error? I don't see Georgia listed in the top 50 classes. This is an outstanding program and consistenly a top ten team with a Hall of Fame coach. What's up with that? Are they focusing primarily on the 2009 class?

UGA is a pretty deep team right now, actually they have 15 players on scholarship right now. THey will lose Rebecca Rowsey, Tasha Humphrey, and Megan Darrah but they gain Porsha Philips and 2008 recruit Meredith Mitchell. Plus he gets reshirt freshman Nicole Stroud. A lot of people are hoping he can pick up one more frontline player for 2008. Not sure if he will or not but needs one especially with injury concerns. I think that transfer of Porsha Philips was big because I felt we lost out on players like Brooklyn Pope and Lasondra Barrett.

Andy revamped his staff in hiring Kim Hairston from Cal and Cam Newbauer who made the transition from the men's team. They are hot on players in 2009 such as Jasmine James (I heard she likes UGA a LOT) and Kelsey Bone. 2009 will be important because he needs to start finding replacements for Christy Marshall, Ashley Houts, and Angel Robinson.

My self proclaimed “EXPERT” analysis of the top 4 recruiting classes… Not that anyone cares what I think but I thought I would share anyway.

Rutgers has made a push that I don’t think many expected and has set the stage to have a promising squad for the next several years. This class indeed has nice versatility and athletic ability with 5 immediate impact players “WOW”…. I did think they would go after a 6’5” somewhere in this recruiting process….….

Tennessee once again garners talent from all over but seems to me to have picked up the same prototype players at the sf position. No disrespect intended because all three of them can flat out hoop. I like the idea of getting a player like Brianna Bass that is under the radar and untainted by the exposure scene. I for one will be cheering for her.

UCONN has the class with the most upside in my opinion. Delledonne – a legit do everything small forward (images of Candace Parker). 2 top shooting guards in Doty and Hayes with unbelievable basketball IQ. Everyone knows that Gino has great vision when it comes to grooming shooting guards and wings. Heather Buck comes in as a slightly undersized center at a generous 6’3” but her footwork and hard nose play will match your average 6’5”. I like this class!

LSU did the opposite of Tenn. Tenn seemed to have picked up a majority of sf and LSU picked up ALL pf. Great class but I have to ask: Where is the outside long range shooting going to come from? Seems to me LSU has the answer for the mid-range game, block presence and rebounding. I would assume they are looking at shooters to fill out their recruiting class????

Hoops2ya self proclaimed "EXPERT" class rankings (disregarding point system): UCONN #1, Rutgers #2, Tennessee #3, LSU #4

If UNC gets Johnson that would move them to my # 3 spot!

Of course all of my self proclaimed “EXPERT” opinions do not factor in existing roster players! No need for you all to thank me: This evaluation was FREE of charge!

Great support coaching staff along with LaKesha Frett! I have had the pleasure of briefly meeting Coach Cam and he seems really sharp and I have heard good things about Coach Hairston.

This would be huge: A 2009 class of Jasmine James and Kelsey Bone would tip the scales for UGA (top notch perimeter and post play). I know that Jasmine James has taken several unofficial visits: including Louisville, Georgia, Mississippi, Vanderbilt etc. However the latest news is (according to the ever reliable sources of facebook and myspace) Duke has jumped in with both feet and she will be taking an unofficial there and to Illinois. ;)

It's going to be fight for her. She visited Athens last weekend. I just heard about Duke until now. Also, I heard UCONN is on her as well. She's probably the best guard in 2009. She has the tools to be really great. Also, another fan compared her to Saudia Roundtree. I would say that UGA and Louisville are her leaders right now from reading on the scout boards. That will change as time goes on. I hope Andy stays on her.

I hope he picks up a solid post player (Erinn Thompson, Kelsey Bone, Tamika Willis). I would say that he needs a long wing such as Blance Alverson. 2009 could be very good to Andy. More to come....

I was also asking that question to myself as I periodically update this recruiting class rankings. They are the only perennial Top 25 team which does not have any recruit from the Top 100 players (per Hoopgurlz.com) for 2008.....

There should be a disclaimer or asterik attached to this statement. This is a very very subjective comment based on an even more subjective and arbitrary list. On paper anything looks good but championships are won on the court. Look at Tennesee with their year in year out top ranked classes including C Parker who as a group could never quite get it done but in walks the 5'3 JC transfer Shannon Bobbit, relatively unheradled but one of the major reasons why they were able to get it done. A better example would be Baylor a few years ago winning it all with Sophia Young and a cast that did not tear up anybody's recruiting list and were relatively unknown to that point. I'm sure there will be more Baylor's in the years to come and players that the lists overlooked who will turn out to be prime time players and many of those who were ballyhooed and hyped that will be flat out busts at the next level.

Relax

The thread says they have the #1 class. No one is saying that they are guaranteed any championships.

By the way Bobbit was a big time player in both the high school and Juco levels. Its not that lists overlook players like Sophia Young its a case of someone not playing on a big time high school or AAU team. To get highly rated you really need to do one of those two things to get noticed.

Joe you have Gtown ranked at 22, if you add (Latia Magee who is ranked 86 by hoopgurlz and Morgan Williams from Dickinson high school in Texas and Ruby Lee Wright from Latta high school in South Carolina) will that make Gtown's 2008 class top 15 class?

This is all based on the information that the poster presented. We know there are going to be upsets & my favorite saying is every 1 aint gonna be 1 & every 100 aint gonna be 100. But as for now, based on the facts presented this is a relatively accurate statement. It doesn't say Rutger will be the Champs!
Oh, and Bobbit was definitely a not a nobody...ask the New Yawkers around these parts.

The “class rankings” are all based on a cumulative point total.
The cumulative point total is based on a point system assigned to individual players.
The individual player gets points based on their individual star rating and where they shake out in their specific class ranking (1-100).

Assuming that the individual player rankings and star ratings are accurate: This will give you a non-subjective point system to determine the strongest class. Joemontes did an excellent job of ranking the classes based on a point system which eliminates all of the subjectivity.

That is why I posted comments earlier on this thread that attempted to incorporate some of that subjectivity that included things like the position diversity and balance of the recruiting class.

Personally: I think UCONN has the most diverse group of players and the better class for 2008.

Oh, by the way: The existing players of each program will impact the success of that incoming class!

It’s all in fun because non of us really know what class will be the best until the ball hits the hardwood.

Shannon may have been unheralded for you but not in New York. Shannan won two State Championships with Bergtraum in New York. Once Shannon graduated it opened the door for two Christ the King championships led by Lorin Dixon. I doubt Bergtraum would have lost if Shannon was on the team.

Relax

I don't mean to get off the subject butttttt......:D

Unfortunately - You are exactly correct! That is how you get noticed for rankings. Typically the ranking people and different scouting services that rank players are out seeing the high profile teams and tournaments (including high school seasons). Which honestly only makes sense – go where they think the best players are!

Fortunately – that’s not how you get noticed for a scholarship. Good college coaches and good college recruits are able to spot and recognize a talented player even without the hype of their AAU team or school team. College coaches will show up in all types of locations when they hear there is a potential good player on the court. Additionally, college coaches generally don’t attempt to cover the whole country in search of good players like individuals who are doing rankings. Soooo the college coaches are able to dig a little deeper in their Region / Area. Basically, college coaches have a more concentrated area and a bigger staff.

Good example: Briana Bass for 2008 class. Obviously Tenn has seen something in this under the radar player. That is Awesome!:)

This is NO knock on the people who do rankings; I’m merely stating that colleges have more resources and lesser ground to cover to find those hidden talents.:D

Her top three were reported as Washington, Rutgers and Oklahoma. She's taken officials to the first two schools, and I'm not sure but she may have taken an unofficial to Oklahoma.

Usually the visit high wears off within 48 hours, so I expect that we won't know much until she decides. All I've heard about her except from Hoopgurlz has been second-hand information at best, and she really hasn't tipped her hand.

Both Washington and Rutgers are a LONG way from home, while Oklahoma may be a 20 minute drive. Rutgers could use another inside player. I have no idea where Washington stands on that, and Oklahoma is definitely going to need some inside players to replace the Paris sisters and a year later, Abi Olajuwon.

If Oklahoma is truly in Liz Lay's top three, then I'd expect an official visit there this weekend or next. The rumors out there have been all over the place, so I have no idea what her thoughts are about any of those schools.
