Texas is broke down into four regions and San Antonio, along with SW Texas, are in region 4. The state championship consists of the winner of each region which have the semi-final and championship games. Region 4 is, by far, the weakest region in the state of Texas. Cy-Fair (5A) met R4's champion in the semis and killed them by somewhere in the 30's. Cy-Fairs' bench players played more than half the game and had a career game against R4's champion. R4's 3A champion lost by close to 50 points in the semifinal at state. R4 did win a championship in class 2A this year but that's sort of watching paint dry.

R4 has a few players to talk about but not at the level of the girls in the big city, excluding San Antonio.

Is it a population thing with SW Texas as opposed to Houston or Dallas metro area?

No, I think it has a lot to do with involvement/interest. SW Texas's population rivals that of the other regions. I don't want to get into why there's a lack of interest but shouldn't take much to figure it out.

I remember when the US dominated the world in basketball however that has changed. I don't know what % of non US citizens are playing in the NBA but I would bet it's at least 20-25%. My point is if someone caught those kids very young and taught them the basics things might change a bit. Hey you are one of the sharpest guys I know, I am talking bball, one liners and story telling and I bet you could take the top 20 youngsters, say 10s and 11s. Teach them the basics and coach them in HS and I bet they could make a run in Austin. Am I on the money with that assesment or what?

I know nothing about SW Texas players. I would love to hear about the kids and who they play for.

Starting at a younger age (8,9 or 10), I think the three most important things to teach are dribbling, passing and defense (not in any particular order). I didn't include shooting because, at that age, they're not strong enough to get it to the basket whether 8.5' or 10'. They tend to create bad habits with their shooting form that is almost impossible to correct later on. To increase the strength along with shooting form, at a young age, have them lay on their back and balance the ball on their shooting hand. Then have them roll it off of their hand by throwing it straight up in the air and catching it with their shooting hand. Start out with 20 to 30 reps a day and increase it accordingly. After a month of this, get them out on the court and have them shoot the ball with one hand only a couple of feet away until they're consistant. Move them back a couple of more feet and repeat this process until they're free throw distance (15'). You would be amazed of the results on not only their strength but their shooting form as well.

This is how I taught mine, not to say this is the how you do it, but it's worked for me.

Well said my friend. You made a comment that brought back memories of when my son was playing T-Ball. One of the dads told me he was taking his kid, I guss 5 or 6 at the time, to a hitting instuctor after practice. He told me had been doing it for weeks and I said for a kid this young. He responded by telling me if the kid learns the right way off the get, he is ahead of the game. I have seen so many kids shooting incorrectly and even though they have been succesful by the time they are in HS it is hard to correct those bad habits. I played with a guy in the 7th grade who was piegon toed and shot this awkward one hand shot. He averaged about 30 but never had any success after that with basketball.
So many of these coaches, even at sub 11 years are hooked on winning and I see atheltic 10s and under who can press and win big but aren't being taught the funds. Good input and thanks.

two players in San Antonio that are really making noise hapen to be two players in the class of 2010. Charlicia Harper, and Meighan Simmons. These two are clearly the class of them all.
