Most of the time we talk about who can play right now and who is producing right now. Lets see if we can predict who from our region has a real chance of making it to the WNBA. What players from the classes of (07,08,09,10,and 2011) do you feel has the potential to make it all the way to the WNBA. Have some of the top kids in our region reached their peak already. I think a lot would depend on the upside of a player. I will start it off with a player I think will make it to the WNBA.
Chasity Clayton - This is a kid who is in the dead middle of making a real position change. She has definately not reached her full potential. She is ranked 28th (HoopGurlz) but that is misleading. There is not many in the 08 class who can match her skill and athleticism. As she gets more comfortable playing on the perimeter she is going to get better and better. In the WNBA a lot depends on matches and mismatches. I think Chasity is going to be one of those players that has the advantage on most nights in the WNBA. At 6"1 she has serious hops and she is very explosive both of those attributes translate into pro player. Besides Sheila White she probably has one of the sweetest strokes I've seen. As she gets more consistent shooting the ball she will become such a complete player. She plays hard all the time. She is not afraid to try different moves in a game and when she gets to the point where she is putting it all together, she's going to be tough. I think where she's at now combined with her upside makes her almost a sure shot to get to the league! Who Else?

The WNBA as it exist today will probably not exist when these classes are draft eligible.
The league is banking on this next draft class with Ms. Parker to usher in a new era for the league...or else all future pros need to take a extra foreign language class in college.

So much has to happen and to fall in place for a high school girl to get to the WNBA, sports fans. Primarily, she has to go to the right college for herself, continue to properly develop skill-wise, and play at a college and in a league where the proper politicals are in place enough. It would also help if she is playing the position in college that she'll be playing in the pros, by her junior year in college.
Having said all of this, the IH thinks that these girls in our region may have a legit shot at it (projecting from this far out):
1. Jasmine Thomas, 5'9", 2007, Oakton/Vienna, Va. (Duke);
2. Marah Strickland, 5'11", 2007, Towson Catholic/Towson, Md. (Maryland);
3. Lynetta Kizer, 6'3", 2008, Potomac/Woodbridge, Va.;
4. Chasity Clayton, 6'1", 2008, Thomas Edison/Alexandria, Va.;
5. Tierra Ruffin-Pratt, 5'10", 2009, T.C. Williams/Alexandria, Va.

Interesting thread. I'm not sure one can put Chasity with JT, MS, LK, and TRP. She's got the ability but is a level below the other four at this point.

I don't think that the tread is meant to compare the players with each other, the list mearly points to a group of players who may meet the criteria. if you look at C.Clayton as a prospect you would clearly see an unbelievable athlete with a passion for the game. I hear she is a student of the game and improves monthly. if you look at her game from her frosh year at o'connell until now and the growth she has made and her transition from post to wing still maintaining post strenght with wing speed and three point shooting it is scary how good this kid could be by her junior year of college.

I agree with you that she has the potential - but she has further to go than the other 4 since she not at their level today. That's my only point.

Actually, hoopsfl, the way scouts and WNBA/NBA people look at the high school/college games, Chasity would be predicted to have an EASIER path to the WNBA than the other four! She already has WNBA athleticism, in abundance, at her projected WNBA position--the 2/3--RIGHT NOW.
Each of the other four will have to make a transition from college to pro, in terms of athleticism (Jasmine probably would have to make less of a transition than the other three).
Obviously, these four girls have matured at certain skill sets, while Chasity is still maturing; this is most likely the root of your opinions.
However, ANYONE can learn skills--but not EVERYONE can be ultra-athletic, as the pro scouts say...

Good points IH. Why do you think she's not at the others level today? I've watched her play since she was 12 (when she was physically impressive) but don't know if she took up the game as early as the others whom I've watch since they were 8 or 9.

I see your point and you asked a good question in your last post, I'm saying that the tread ask about potential and not current level and was specific about not clasifying were the girl is NOW. (read the opening tread). so in my opinion if there is an 4'10 rising 8th grader (14ppg) with mad handles and a nice set shot that plays the point well and a 5'11 pf/sf rising 7th (6ppg) that's making athe transition to guard with fair ballhandling and limited range on her shot and off the charts athletism and you asked who had the most 'potential' to make the WNBA? I would go with the latter, even though the latter may not be at the level of the 1st right now.

Apparently, she's played in the post all of her life, with no skill development until the last three club seasons at the wing position, and the last school season at the post position.
Also, the other four have been playing their natural positions YEAR-ROUND since AT LEAST they were rising-freshmen, while Chasity won't play her natural position year-round until her freshman year in college!

pgcop - I was only bringing that up since current skill level can be indicative of how much of ones potential one may reach. I think we would all be happy if Chasity one day reaches her full potential and entertains us at the Verizon Center.
